One killed, 10 injured in motorhome accident on I-59 - WDAM TV - Channel 7 - Hattiesburg and Mississippi News

According to the article 13 people were in this rented motorhome when a tire blew and they crashed into a tree. Lots of room here for speculation about being overweight (13 passengers, luggage, food) and interesting that it appears from the picture in the article that the motorhome maybe split in half on impact. Thoughts and sympathy for the deceased and injured and their families.

My gosh, 13 people in a motorhome....how many were without seat belts? Sure sad to see so many hurt, but it is a motorhome, not a bus.

People need to be safe in their travels.

Sad story. I do wish that rental companies would think through the concept of renting a large (appears to be a DP) to someone unless they have some kind of experience in driving large rigs. Of course, we don't know if this person did. There is a company in our area that rents class a's only to people who have a CDL.

Very sad story all right. It's horrible to have so many people impacted by what was supposed to be a fun outing. True there's a lot of room for speculation here. Maybe we'll hear more details soon.

It really is scary how rental companies will turn over the keys of a big rig to just about anyone with a class C license. IMO, there is a big lack of understanding by non RVers on what's required to keep these coaches under control. Some entertainment media doesn't help the problem with movies like Robin Williams "RV" a the TV series from a couple of years back which followed several families going cross country in rental Class A's. I know these were for comedy but it's easy for someone to be left with the impression that these rigs can be driven in a way which is not at all safe.

I guess if I could take one look at this wreck, the first thing I would check is the date code on the tires.

Prayers to the families.

Rick

I don't see anything in the article about a blown tire, or am I missing something?

In the comments on the article one passerby stated he saw a white SUV 300 yds from the crash site with damage and speculated the MH may have been run off the road due to the SUV making unsafe lane change.

I didn't see anything about a blow out.

I can believe the unsafe lane change by a car though, as we know it happens all the time.

A sad story, my prayers go out to the families.

Horrible accident, but, JZICK, where did you get the stuff about a tire blowing out??????? And where did you get the "split in half" junk??? It HIT A TREE, there's gonna be damage! But it sure doesn't look like it split in half!

Sorry, the original article I read blamed a blown tire, then I referenced another. Here is the original link Blowout blamed in fatal wreck on way to BCS game | www.wftv.com

Many years ago I rented the largest size U-haul truck. It was in deplorable condition and I had to fight to keep it driving straight due to so much play in the steering. All I needed to rent that beast was a current driver's license.

Ever since, I have always given rental trucks careful scrutiny when passing. Someone with as much experience as me could be driving it! It now seems wise to do the same with rental RVs. But not all rentals are marked.

My heart goes out to all involved.

My bad. The first report I read did not indicate a cause. The last report I read indicated a blown front tire. Also, this was not a rental, it was borrowed from a friend who was not on board. And, the driver was said to be a professional bus driver.
In case you didn't see it, the driver has now also died, so it is a double fatality.

Nope, the article says a wheel blew out on a Freightliner RV.
