My Consignment Selling Experience

Well, we finally sold our 2007 40DP.

I had started out trying to sell it myself but quickly got frustrated with the tire kickers, scam artist, and bottom feeders so went with a local dealer to sell it on consignment.

It took them four months, but three of those were during the hot Arizona summer when not much happens at all. The dealer was able to negotiate with the buyers on a much broader level than I ever could. Taking their travel trailer trade in, replacing tires and batteries, offering both a short term and extended warranty, and creative financing all got the deal done.

So, I would highly recommend anyone considering a sale to consider using a dealer on consignment. We're sure happy we did.

Rick

Good to hear. I never considered a consignment. Thanks for the post and the information.

What are you using for a RV now?

We've retired from life on the road and settled down here in Arizona on a golf course.

This is what I replaced my 40DP with.

I had the same experience, first trying to sell it myself for 8 months, gave it to a dealer and it was sold in a few weeks.

I think I am going to have PPL here in Houston TX handle selling my DP. Their commission is 10%. They have a good turn over on their units for sale.

Are you running Goodyears or Michelins on that? And I hear the biodiesel can really gum up those engines, so be careful.

Good news. I have only seen places getting 15% and doing nothing more than posting it on a board inside the sales office. Good to hear places actively working to sell.

Congratulations! Jeff forgot to tell you to check the date stamp on those tires.

It wasn't consigned on a percentage basis. We agreed upon what my bottom line dollar figure was and anything over that was the dealer's "commission". It really gets complicated when they have to work in new tires, batteries, and the buyer's trade in. I'm not sure anyone really knows how much the "got" for my coach.

They did call me back when they had this serious buyer on the hook and asked if I would consider coming down a couple of grand to meet the demands of the new buyer. I agreed. I'm sure they could have been handing me a line with that strategy just to line their pockets a little more, but in the end I'm a happy guy nonetheless.

I couldn't get my TPMS to fit the golf cart so I let it go with the coach.

We were on the other end of the consignment experience. We shopped around a lot and found the rig we wanted at a consignment shop in El Mirage, AZ. We walked away from their offers until we got the price we wanted plus new windshield, slide toppers, tires, x-bracing and sealed roof. We never could have done that with a private buyer. I was apprehensive but its all worked out well.

I never did find out what the commission was but its my guess its like Rick's was.... he set what he wanted and let them keep the rest.

Thanks Rick and enjoy your new rig!

Our experience was exactly as described by Rick and we eventually realized we were not going to sell the MH privately. We got "real" about accepting a wholesale price and I hope the Dealer made a bundle of $$ on the sale, because he sold it in less than 2 weeks and I had my agreed upon cheque in the bank! Dealers & salesmen get a lot of abuse on this forum, but unless you've experienced the problems associated with selling your rig privately, you often don't realize these people are like everyone else ( excluding hedge fund managers) and they " work" for their money!

That rig is one clean ride! Question, is it a pusher or a gasser?
