That is sweet for them. It must be a real money maker, with 2,145,447 visitors in 2012.

Does anyone know how a private company got such a good deal?

National Park concessionaires submit bids to the park service for the privilege of operating restaurants, stores and other facilities. The concessionaire with the highest bid is granted a contract to operate within the park for a given period of time. The park service gets its cut from the concessionaire.

The Rushmore Parking concessionaire also built a multiple level parking structure that allows parking close to the entrance instead of sprawling acres of parking lots. Much nicer than the old parking. Plus, the parking pass is good for a year, so you can return at no extra fee. We returned for the night lighting ceremony a few nights later. I don't begrudge any of the NP concessionaires, they have changed hands a number of times in Yellowstone and other parks I frequent. They remain competitive to keep their leases. I don't like the prices anymore, I remember when a cabin in YNP could be had for under $25, it's now over $90 a night. Of course I used to buy gas for $.28.9 too!

Craig....I used to keep mine in the motor home and show it when we enter a park. I soon found that it can be used for a discount in some of the parks that have museums or other attractions that require a fee to enter. I now leave the pass in my wallet so that it's always with me when we're travelling.

A lot of places that you would think take the pass...don't....and a lot of places that you never thought would take the pass....do.

I have a National Parks pass and discovered last year that it also worked in some Oregon state parks.
