Nationwide now Safeco

Ok so last yr. I posted that National aka Nationwide raised my first yr. rate 25%, so my broker agent got me another reasonable rate with Safeco. They told me that Nationwide was raising their rates to try and play catch up in the market because they were basically not charging enough. So now after a yr. with Safeco I'm getting another 25% increase for the same reason that Nationwide raised theirs last yr. RV's are a new market for them and they are learning as they go.
They said they ran comps with two different companies and it was still $548 less than the closest other company. This is not happening in every state they said but is happiness in Mo. There is no other reason she said except for that. So what say you.

I have been with National Interstate for 8 years and any rate increases have been very small. Get you agent to keep looking or find another agent that may have better access to other companies.

Bummer! I've had Safeco for several years without significant increases, but this may be the year!

Missouri is one of a few states that are seeing the increases.

It's common for insurance companies to offer low promotional rates to get a new customer or to obtain a footing in a new market, e.g. RVs. Then they boost the rates a year or two down the road.

Had a similar situation with Safeco. I let AAA Motor Club search out the best prices. They found the Progressive was cheapest for my situation.

I'll switch every year if there is another provider at a lower cost. My Safeco policy was going up 35% and I had no claims or incidents to cause this.

Safeco

Safeco had all my insurance - home, cars, MH - last year - had been with them 4 years or so. This year they seemed too high - had it requoted through my agent - Travellers was lower by 35%. Unfortunately Traveler does not cover MH's over $100,000 - so after my upgrade, I will need to switch. The reason my agent gave me was they have experienced significant losses and they were doing this to catch up even though they were loosing good clients in the process. Funny finish is that he will be getting quotes for just the MH from Safeco & Progressive - I did have Progressive in the past.

I am not sure any one company is always the best!

Contact Farm & City Insurance Services in Forest City IA....and ask about Nationwide/AMCO insurance. Or maybe they work with other RV insurance companies that might fit your needs.

Also, heard Miller Insurance in Lake Oswego, OR is OK. 503-636-6347.

Sounds about right. The significant cost from this year's Hurricanes will end up touching everyone's pocket I'm sure.

Insurance Companies don't loose money in the end.

sorry, but I'll have to disagree with you 'assumption' of how insurance companies work: I'm an independent agent, AND a Safeco agent.

NO company can provide a 'teaser' or 'starter' rate that is ANY DIFFERENT than anyone else's rate, even those that have been with the same company and policy for many years - all things being equal. Period. It's illegal in every state.

The Rate is the Rate. There is nothing else.
If a carrier decides that they need more 'rate' in order to provide more income to offset claims costs and higher costs of doing business, then they can either start using these new 'published' rates with a possibility of them being pulled back if the state's insurance commissioner rejects them, OR in many states, they must WAIT until the insurance commissioner ACCEPTS the new rates, as in Georgia.
By definition then, there is no such option to provide a 'teaser' rate for anyone.

Of course, one might 'assume' that this is the case because of the nature of the 'advertising' done by most of the companies, but we ALL know what 'advertising' really is: blowing smoke, making you 'feel' good, or telling you 'most' of something, relying on your human nature to 'assume' the rest. Many of us assume that a company that says they can save you a certain 'percent' in 'so many minutes' will do that, but the advertisement does NOT say that it is for EVERY person that calls. The reality is that it ONLY applies to those that had a Higher premium to START WITH! Who is going to 'switch' when a quote is higher?? of course, we all know this, but the advertising apparently works regardless.

No company will ever have the best rate, all the time.
No company will ever have the same rate for everyone, everyone is different.
No company will ever be any better at paying claims that any other 'new' company you consider switching to - they all submit to the state's insurance commissioner.
No company will ever give you a 'teaser' rate to 'get you in the door' - it's not legal.

my 'free advice?: check with many insurance companies every year, or have an agent who has many companies to choose from and will help you do that(though they themselves don't offer 'every' company, so doing your homework still pays)

: )
