Neat Google maps discovery

Want to get a rough idea of what is ahead in the way of climbing and decents. Get directions by auto between two points - say Denver and Grand Junction CO. Then select bicycle from travel options.

Doesn't using the bike route on Google maps take you off the interstates and restricted roads?

That's OK if you don't mind that route, but it's surely not the fastest...i.e. Denver to Grand Junctions is 234 miles by auto, 311 by bike.

Altitude (climbs and descents) is reportedly coming to Google maps for the new "economy" route selection...that will be a real eye opener, me thinks.
