Depart after Easter. Wherever you plan to be on Memorial Day make reservations as soon as possible Might even be too late for the more popular places. The must stay locations I would also make reservations especially once schools start letting out for summer in early to mid June. Since you'll be in the area Rushmore is about a day or two drive from Yellow Stone.

Don't rush, these parks are the jewels of the country, we've been traveling to the SW from Alaska 5 yrs. and we haven't even scratched the surface.
Most of these are at altitude, May is just about as early as you travel to these parks. Utah, Wyoming, S. Dakota and the surrounding states are full of parks.
If you are planning Zion, (Yellowstone doesn't open until the first of June) you will need reservations.
The others CaynonLand, Arches in the Moab in May there are plenty of campgrounds, but if an event is planned in the area they all fill up.
Rte. 12 in Utah is worth traveling, not as bad as many describe.
If you are looking for specifics private message me I will be glad to help.

we will be hosting at the Buffalo Bill State Park, just outside of Cody (the museum in Cody is a must see if you like western history and guns!
The state park is about 40 miles east of Yellowstone's east gate and the scenery is unbelievable! you can reserve full hook up sites for the state parks on line!

I second the museum in Cody. One of my favorite museums ever!
Don't forget bear spray if you like to hike and fish. Hiking is a great way to escape from the crowds in Yellowstone. Be sure and bring your fly rod.

We have our reservations for the last two weeks of June 2017.
Leaving California Thursday evening and have reservations in Yellowstone starting Wednesday for 5 days, then down to Grand Tetons for 4 days, then heading back to California.
I guess it is 2 weeks and 2 days.
We made reservations in November for our 33' MH and had no problems getting in. Now we are working on specific things to do while there.

Thank you! We are planning a late summer visit to Yellowstone, hopefully the first of many, and your info is exactly the kind of stuff we need. Lots of other great suggestions in this thread too.

If you are over purchase the LIFETIME Senior Pass for $10.00. If under there is a annual pass for $80.00 for the # of places that your planning on visiting it would be worth it.
