Need Satellite Dish
We are currently living full time in a 1999 class A. Had Directv come out today to see if satellite dish we have (crank up manual set Winegard) can be used. They said 'no' and to contact Winegard. We Moved Directv from house to RV. Can get playlist of already recorded programs and watch them. Need thoughts on what to do. What should we buy? Portable, roof mount? What? What brand (or do we have to stick with Wingard?) we definitely want automatic. What will give us the most bang for the buck? We watch a good amount of TV. We have been in our MH for a whole 3 days now!!!! Thank you very much for any quick info you can provide.

What ever you decide, keep in mind that Direct TV may be shutting down Standard Definition TV in 2017.
That means any Dome or single LNB dishs will not work.

When we moved our DirecTV service from our house DirecTV installed a new Slimline-5 SWM dish. We had a post to put it on, otherwise, they would have supplied a tripod. They also had a "movers special" at the time and upgraded out receiver to a HR-44 for free.

The receiver that you have will probably determine what possible satellite dishes you can use.

We always loved our Travler by Winegard, after having several portables and roof mounted domes. We use the SK-1000 with Dish.

X2... you can't beat the reliability and convenience of the Wineguard Trav'ler. One button to push and it will raise and seek out and lock on to all available satellites. $$ spent is well worth it.

If it is a choice between roof mount OR (and not and) a portable I would get a portable. We have stayed in a lot of parks wonder trees where our roof mount could not get any signal. That's when we get out the portable.
The Winegard Anser portable is a good choice. It has a larger dish than most an is a little less acceptable it weather issues. It is fully automatic and has two feeds. Having a larger dish also makes it larger overall.

Wineguard Travel'r will be about the best. Just make sure you get the version for Directv if you are sticking with them.

Temporarily, I would buy a portable dish compatible with your receiver, a tripod, some cable, and a portable signal meter.
Long term I would buy a permanent Winegard roof mount. If you get the SK-SWM3, it is compatible with the Genie receiver which allows up to 5 simultaneous recording channels. If you have another TV you would like to connect you just get a Genie-mini box for that TV and it connects wirelessly to the Genie. No wiring to play with in the RV.
When you get the roof mount you can keep the portable for those forested sites you may stay on.

Note that the "end of SD" doesn't necessarily mean that rooftop domes no longer work. Direct will still broadcast some sort of digital tv signal on their 101 satellite, which is what the domes can receive. It's the receiver inside the coach that needs to be able to handle HD rather than SD. Direct hasn't announced yet what satellites will carry what signals when the last SD bird goes away, but you can bet they aren't going to leave the 101 satellite position unfilled. They paid billions for it, so they aren't going to throw it away!

Go with Dish Network, I've had them for 18 years. No real problems.

Been using a portable dish with the VIP 722 for years. Can get signal almost everywhere we have been.
