Neighbors barking dog

We have a neighbor at the sticks and bricks house that "takes custody" of their daughters dog that never shuts up. They get this pleasure because she is taking classes, second career I assume, she is fifty-ish and the dog is a "distraction. No kidding? Now guess who is distracted. We have nicely hinted that it is possible to get him to be quiet and having two dogs that we make sure do not bark like that even made some suggestions like a no bark collar or an air horn.

At our winter RV CG the neighbor has a dog that frequently wakes up DW. I don't seem to be able to sleep as late. He also has a habit of biting people and they let him off leash. Lets not get started with the biting dog conversation though.

So short of losing our friendship with these folks that we really like, how do we stop this?

Barking dogs can be taught not to bark, if the custodian deems it necessary. If something undesirable happens every time he barks, most dogs will quickly make the association. You have to be willing to consistently administer the 'undesirable' part, which many people find unpalatable.

I spent two sleepless nights teaching our young dog that purposeless barking was unacceptable. Then spent 14 wonderful years with a quiet dog that would only bark when appropriate.

When my mother in law moved in with us, she brought two 12 year old dogs with her that barked relentlessly. I taught them not to bark in one night. No problem since.

I predict 'losing your friendship' is in the cards, unless you can sit down as friends and discuss the problem rationally.

My sister had the same problem at her house. She bought one of those bird house stop barking devices. It works pretty well. You can get them on Amazon.com and read the reviews yourself. She can't remember the exact brand she got, but the dog did stop barking.

If they are friends why not be honest with them and tell them the barking dog is bothering you? If that does not work since they really are not friends call police/animal control.

Many cities, Most I've lived in have a dog barking ordinance in place so YOU don't have to be the bad guy....Just the snitch.
If your neighbor doesn't have the where-with-all to silence her dog; it leaves you few options.
Me thinks them kind of neighbors are a pain in the behind....

Chances are very good the barking dog is bothersome to them as well. They should work on a solution as friends before getting mr bighat involved.

Tell the owners! We always travel with dogs and I often ask if the dogs have been a problem.
We have not had complaints, with shades down and radio on, the dogs are not as aware of outside sounds or distractions.
We were at a casino CG one night, dogs barking at 2-3 am, a handful of loud drunks were outside howling and barking back at the dogs. ....

We had that problem years ago with a house that backed up to our apartment. He came in from the late shift, put the dog out and left it out to bark. I got a buddy at the phone number to give me the phone number for the address. After he had gone to bed and as I got up the next morning I would call him and tell him his dog was barking and keeping us awake. It only took two or three nights of calls and he figured out how to keep the dog quiet.

Was talking to the manager of one of the parks I stay in the other day.. I mentioned that one of our neighbors had, not a barking dog, but a barking golf car.. That @#@# would blow his horn every few minutes and it is one of those musical horns.

Did I confront him.. NO.

Did I have coffee with one of the head security guards.. Yes.

Did it improve things.. Surprisingly.. YES.

We adopted an older Jack that had separation anxiety. Our boxer mix that rarely barks taught him not to bark, quite forcefully. No injuries, but she let him know quickly it would not be tolerated.

You have to be at a fairly close distance to the dog to get the benefit.

Just had an incident at the CG. Folks behind us put their 2 dogs out at 6:30 am every morning, nonstop barking. Went to the office, complained and they called the owners. Next morning the concert started. Got dressed went over knocked on the door,wife answered. I calmly told her that quite time was until 8am and that the barking was disturbing my sleep. She said she was walking them, I said they were still barking. End of discussion. Around 11am I'm taking our dogs out for a walk, her husband gets in my face screaming to stay off his lot and that I threatened his wife. Let me say I have never threatened a woman in my life, so I was somewhat confused. I explained that I hadn't done that but he continued. I put the dogs back in the MH so they wouldn't feel like there was a dangerous situation. The husband had totally derailed he's in my face screaming. I called him a few choice names and walked away, all the while he's telling me he's going to do me bodily harm. I'm 6'3" 260# so I wasn't worried but I have never seen anyone lose it over some thing as trivial as controlling their dogs. Went to the office moved our site and are sleeping like babies.
PS Lesson learned, talk to the husband so there is no confusion.

Sadly, your story is not unusual. Folks seem to be on edge more often these days with anger easily just below the surface. If in the later evening, it can be aided with alcohol. We had a neighbor who blared their stereo (just too much bass) at all hours. I walked over at 2 am and asked nicely for them to turn it down and got my head bit off and no positive result. Went over at 6 pm the next time and they apologized that time when I asked and it was no longer an issue. Seems that the sobriety played a part. . Lesson learned.

I was always taught that one oerson's rights ends where another person's rights begins. That and the golden rule have always been good perspectives.
