Compact trucks with diesels were nice in the days when gas engines were terrible inefficient and did not last long. In those days diesels got close to 45 mpg and ran for 5 or 6 hundred k miles.
Now gas engines have as good economy and last just as long with less maintenance costs.

The diesel makes more torque at the right RPMS (Power band) than any typical gas engine. This is why they are offering this to enhance the towing capability of the 1500.
The REAL question it seems to me is why GM seems to think it needs a V8 diesel instead of the inline 6 in the heavy duty pickups. Virtually all diesels made by CAT, Detroit Diesel, Volvo, Mercedes and Cummins for heavy duty (class 7 and 8 trucks) as well as for medium duty trucks are ALL inline 6 engines.
Fewer parts, easier to access, easier to maintain are all attributes of the inline six. Horsepower and torque can be as much or more than similar sized (litre) V8 engines....so this begs the question Why build a V8?
My guess is it's a "buyer perception" issue. IE a V8 is bigger better and more powerful...even if that isnt the case in reality.
As for fuel economy I rented a diesel Fiat XL500 in France this summer and with 4 adults all of our luggage and my dog I got 50 MPG (yes I converted it correctly) The diesel will almost always get better mileage.
As for my Cummins in my Dodge 2500 it's oil change interval is 15,000 miles. Making the maintenance costs similar to gas.
