Gas is such a better option at those power levels I dont know why they are doing this.

Compact trucks with diesels were nice in the days when gas engines were terrible inefficient and did not last long. In those days diesels got close to 45 mpg and ran for 5 or 6 hundred k miles.

Now gas engines have as good economy and last just as long with less maintenance costs.

When the head bolts/studs go all the way down to the main journal webbing it a pretty damn strong clamp.

The diesel makes more torque at the right RPMS (Power band) than any typical gas engine. This is why they are offering this to enhance the towing capability of the 1500.

The REAL question it seems to me is why GM seems to think it needs a V8 diesel instead of the inline 6 in the heavy duty pickups. Virtually all diesels made by CAT, Detroit Diesel, Volvo, Mercedes and Cummins for heavy duty (class 7 and 8 trucks) as well as for medium duty trucks are ALL inline 6 engines.

Fewer parts, easier to access, easier to maintain are all attributes of the inline six. Horsepower and torque can be as much or more than similar sized (litre) V8 engines....so this begs the question Why build a V8?

My guess is it's a "buyer perception" issue. IE a V8 is bigger better and more powerful...even if that isnt the case in reality.

As for fuel economy I rented a diesel Fiat XL500 in France this summer and with 4 adults all of our luggage and my dog I got 50 MPG (yes I converted it correctly) The diesel will almost always get better mileage.

As for my Cummins in my Dodge 2500 it's oil change interval is 15,000 miles. Making the maintenance costs similar to gas.

A 10 speed transmission does not need a lot of torque at 1500 rpm. A 5.7 or 6.0 or 6.2 has plenty of torque for the loads a 1500 is rated for.

I will never take my cummins to 15k on an oil change.

It's not about how much torque is there...it is when it gets delivered. A diesel engine will generally deliver it's max torque in the low RPM range 1600 or so. A typical gas engine will only deliver it's max torque at between 2500 and 4000! RPMS.

Your ten sped transmission will be in 5th to 8th gear before it hits max torque from the engine doing you little good. You need the torque down in first and second.

Which means that the diesel delivers the torque WHEN you need it...from a standing stop.

So again that is the reason to go to the diesel in the 1500. It will allow you to tow smoother at less rpms saving fuel and getting the torque when you need it most.

As for the 15k oil changes to the RAM diesel that is what the MFG recommends and the truck is warranted for. Many big class 8 trucks (semi's) go 25 to 30k miles on an oil change ( per MFG rec.) and they are using the same exact oil you are in your diesel. (if you are using something like Rotella etc) Those engines will easily go One Million miles routinely. So the 15 K change interval in the 6.7L Cummins is actually very conservative.

Changing your oil any sooner is a waste of time and money.

Not all diesels have max rpm that low. Many rev to 4000rpm. Especially the lower displacement ones.

Trans programing is different between gas and diesel. A gas trans program is designed to make use of the higher rpm torque. You must have never towed with a gas engine before. When towing, especially with heavy loads the trans will allow the engine to run to its peak power before it shifts. Even to 4500+ rpm.

With engines the final factor is piston speed. How fast the piston is traveling past the cylinder wall.

A 6in stroke diesel running at 2k rpm has the same piston speed of a 3inch stroke gas engine at 4k rpm.

Or a 1in stroke motorcycle engine running at 12k rpm.
