New and Redecorating questions!!

Hi everyone I just found this board and figured that this would be a great place to ask questions! My Husband and I have been full time RVer's for 7 years, With the exception of the last year and a half. We travel for hubby's job and our current state has no year round campgrounds so we are renting a house! We will probably be back in the RV by the end of the year and decided that now is the perfect time to fix it up since we're not in it! Now I have googled and googled and googled and found some pictures of backsplashes that have been done, but I am also wanting to reupholster the window valances and the dining chair cushions. We are also going to redo the flooring in the shower/bathroom area and repaint everywhere! I'm very excited to start all of this, had I known you could do all of that to the RV when we first started it probably would've been redecorated 5 times by now How did everyone come up with themes? And what colors should you stick to for walls? how hard is it to reupholster the window boxes? The chairs seem to be stapled on so I think those will be easier. Does anyone have any photos of their renovation projects? Any and all would be very appreciated! Also hubby is worried that the backsplash will break while traveling? Anyone have any issues with this?
P.S. We have a Carriage fifth wheel with light oak cabinets I can't seems to talk the husband into changing those since there are insane amounts of it in the trailer!

Hi and welcome to the forum. I'm interested in what you decide and why, and how your project turns out. I hope you'll keep us posted.

I don't have answers to most of your questions, but as to coming up with a theme and colors; try to find a theme you like (which I believe is what you're doing right now -- you probably do not want something too dark as it will make your light cabinets look out of place). After that's decided, get an article with colors you like (a swath, a tile, a piece of flooring, a throw pillow) and take that everywhere with you while you deciding colors. Remember the lighting will be different in the store than in your RV so take everything outside to sunlight so you will at least have a consistent standard. Colors can be tricky. I have "good" color sense, but I had no idea how little I knew until I started spending time with an artist/interior decorator. Be prepared to make returns. It's a big undertaking and I wish you luck.

Hi steph

I recently reupholstered our valences and dining chairs. You can read all about in our blog posts at the highlighted links.

A previous upgrade was to replace all our troublesome day/night shaded with MCD pull down shades. The MCD shades are great, and they eliminate the almost constant restringing I used to have to do.

Wow Great JOB!! Very impressive. You left one important instruction out however, could you share? How do you (safely) get the valances OFF the wall? I also have MCD's....and would be devestated if i damaged them taking off the valances...so that has me paralzyed to try it.

Steph1217...We were in Camping World/Chattanooga the other day and noticed they have a few "packages" to choose for your interior redo. These are palettes you can choose from with upholstery, flooring, and the rest. They're done to make it easy for people who can't make choices that haven't already been narrowed down for them or for those who don't want to shop around. Don't know if this is what you're looking for or if it'll help in any way. I'm assuming all CW have this.

Paz...nice job!!! I'm am so NOT a DIY person. I'm always impressed and amazed at people who are and end up with a professional looking result.

Another option, depending on the valence material, is fabric paint. DW and I just completed a complete interior remodel on our older Class A. We used the fabric paint to change the valences from blue to chocolate. We also painted the captains chairs chocolate, and then used the cream seat covers from Camping World. 90% of the chairs are covered, and the remaining portions are now chocolate. We replaced our chairs with barrel chairs from Ikea and we recovered the dinette cushions. Like what you're planning to do, we painted ALL the walls and put up a tile backsplash in the kitchen and also in the bathroom. It has held up great. I'm not at my computer right now, but I can post some pics Monday if you'd like to see how those projects turned out.

We redid the valences last year and some of the "window surrounds". The front captain's chairs were re-upholstered and the sofa and recliner were both replaced by Ekornes Stressless pieces. This year we replaced the front carpet and the kitchen ceramic tile with Armstrong Alterna, Armstrong's luxury vinyl tile line. The dining room chairs are French Country rush-seated ones we brought from our stick and bricks-the original chairs were clunky, too large, and we didn't even want to both reupholstering them. The Norcold was replaced with a real, residential fridge and the original micro/convection oven was replaced with a much-improved GE Profile.

Well, technically, the valance is the piece that goes across the top. The lamberquin (or lambrequin) are the pieces that go down the side.

Straight from the RV manufacturers (never to tell a lie) mouth. LOL

VegasDan did a complete job on his Tradewinds. Lots of pictures and info here http://www.irv2.com/forums/f105/star...nds-61199.html

We did a backsplash two years ago and so far no problems. Here are some pictures of the process we used.

We also did a floor project here are some pictures of that.

Good luck with your upgrades.

Sorry it's taken me so long to respond I've been buried in paint for the last several days! We have officially began the remodel! We primed the interior, which we really should have had tinted to our color but we bought the primer at home depot and the paint at sherwin-williams! We definitely remembered to do that for when we make our way to the bedroom/bathroom part of the RV! Anyways we have applied one coat of dutch cocoa paint and are getting ready to start the second! I have bought 10 different back splashes so far, one day I will make up my mind! We're changing ALL of the furnishings and hardware to the oil rubbed bronze instead of the gold in there now. Now I just need to figure out if I'm going to keep the valances and reupholster them or switch to elegant curtains!? We're also replacing all of the blinds with better ones more than likely from homedepot. Thanks for all the replies and photos I LOVE looking at RV remodels! Pinterest has been my best friend lately! Once I finally finish I will definitely post pictures!

I have a Carriage 5th wheel, too, and there is ton of wood inside of it. There is hardly a wall left to hang pictures or personal touches so I am going to put my own stamp on our RV with paint. When I first decided to redecorate the RV, I began by going to youtube and searchng under full-time RVers, families that full-time, or just anywhere I could find inspiration. When you get on youtube, one video leads to another and another. I love it. The videos showed how others store things and stay organized, what colors they painted theirs and how they live from day to day on the road. I was impressed by how comfortable and homey most of them looked. I am fascinated by how others live in their RVs so this was so entertaining to me. They all used bright colors, removed the valances and hung colorful fabric on windows and lots of pillows seemed to be the going thing. They looked so peaceful and lived-in. I won't go that far because I'm a neat freak and can't stand clutter, but I am going to remove the sides of my valances and am going to recover the tops in espresso leather to match my furniture. I am hanging white sheers on all of the windows in the living area so I can throw open the day/nights in the daytime, but still let in light without losing privacy. I have already recovered the seats of my dining room furniture in the same espresso I will be using on the valances. I found it on sale at Hancock Fabrics. The espresso is gorgeous with our honey oak cabinets. I'm calling my theme Texas/Rustic/Western/with (now don't laugh) Taco Bell's new color pallete they have used in their restaurants...especially on the walls outside of them!. The are now using a dark cocoa or mushroom with just a tiny touch of yellow in it with beautiful jewel tones of purple, avocado green, mustard, paprika...I will be buying fabrics in those colors to make throw pillows for the loveseat. I am also going to redo our countertops in the kitchen and bathroom in a chocolate/black granite look. I found a product in my youtube searches called Giani Granite Countertop Paint. It is not only easy, but it is very inexpensive! For about $65, I can turn my outdated counters into what looks like real granite countertops. I may paint up the walls behind the counters and make them granite, too. Old carpets will be removed. Blonde laminate is going down and then, light tan carpet will go on the slides. There are people out there that do noghing but post videos of people they meet in their travels so we get some insight as to what they have done. It gave me such great ideas about storage and colors and I got to see what worked and what didn't work without trial and error on my part. I know exactly what I want now and I think I may be done by about November when my husband's family comes to visit us for Thanksgiving. I hope you will let me know what you are doing and I will soon be posting pictures of my progress. Good luck with your remodel.

Steph1217: did you know you can buy spray paint that looks exactly like oil rubbed bronze and it won't rub of like you might think it will. My son redid his bathroom and couldn't get the drain out of the bathtub to change it to match the other fixtures he put in. So he spray painted it and 4 year later, it's still great!

I love looking at remodels, too. I am completely obsessed with that!

Thanks for all the responses! We did use the oil rubbed bronze spray paint on all of the brass fixtures that we couldn't find to replace (there were many!!) like all the recessed lighting! Anyways I thought I would post a picture of a before area and an after area. Really we have a lot more than this done, in fact we are almost done but every area is a MESS and I don't want to post photos of the messy areas until they're clean but this before picture I had to find since we didn't take proper "before" photos (completely slipped our minds!) Anyway this is of the sconce we replaced and the roman shade I made that will cover all of our window! Also you can see the paint color we chose in our main area!
