We're thinking about taking a trip up the East Coast next Fall. When is the best time to follow the leaves changing their colors? Any advise is greatly appreciated.

First of all, Welcome to the Site!

Having lived in the Shenandoah Valley for 13 years I have found it is entirely dependent on the night temps and the amount of recent rainfall.
Most years the second week in October was the peak. There are a ton of sites on line that will post the peak times. Get used to being labeled a "peeper"! As in leaf peeper!

Yeah, the second week in October was what I was told when I was trying to time my departure from Maine with the leaves turning. If you're anywhere near, don't miss the Kangamangus Highway in New Hampshire - that was one of the greatest treats since I started traveling and I also loved the train ride to Crawford's Notch. Just be aware that many parks in the northeast (Maine, New Hapshire, Vermont, Massachusettes) close by September 15. You'll need to call a park to make sure they will be open. Other than that, it's a great time to be in the area. Plan on relaxing at your coach or being off the roads on the weekends if you can. The back roads traffic can be unbelievable due to the mob of "leaf-peepers".

My wife and I are starting our retirement by a trip next fall also. The plan was to leave California Sept 1, 2005 and head east hitting the Boston area about 1 Oct and tour the New England states and then down thru the east coast and take the southern route back in December. Just got two books for Xmas on the Big Dig.
However from the post travelin_man just put up it looks like we may run into closed campgrounds. Thanks for the heads up travelin_man!!!
I have been wanting to leave sooner on the trip but my wife has been against that. This is pretty good ammo to use for an excuse to leave early!!!

A check of Trailer Life will show that most of New England campgrounds stay open until October 15 and not September 15. Some here on the Cape stay open even until November 1. There are a couple around the casinos in Mystic, CT that stay open all year round. So does Normandy Farms in Foxboro.

Hey Over_the_Horizon, How are you doing? It's been a while and we missed you!

Don't forget there's Aces High Campground and Highland Orchards Campground that are open all year in South Eastern Connecticut.

Aces High has full hookup, hydrant, sewer, 50A, cable and telco(long term). Highland Orchards I believe has 30A water, electric, cable. I was just there camping a few months back however I didn't stay on the winter sites. The site I was on definitely had 50A.

Both CGs have pull through sites.

Hello...and welcome to New England (in advance). There are many great campgrounds and things to do and see in our area (New Hampshire). If you plan on going to Maine, a beautiful state, the following link will take you to a most wonderful campground, beautiful sites, some right on the ocean and very nice people who own and manage this CG. They even will cook lobster for you and deliver it to your site.

Also, CrazyHorse Campground in Littleton NH is a great place to camp and see the fall colors in the White Mountains and maybe a moose or two, not an uncommon sight. Very nice canoing nearby.
