Hey everyone! Glad to be here but I really just had a question about the trailer I just bought. My apologies for wasting anyone’s time on this forum if this is the wrong spot.

I recently bought a 5x10 trailer that has tires that appear to be dry rotted. The former trailer owner used car tires (p195 60R15) and never owning a trailer before, I’m not sure what trailer tire size I can use.

Any help would be incredibly appreciated and my apologies if this is the wrong place for a question like this.

Welcome, I assume this is not a travel/camping trailer.

If not why not take it to your local trailer dealer and let them look at it for you

Nope, a trailer dealer is a good idea. It’s a cargo trailer and I’ve been looking online for replacement tires but I wasn’t sure if someone on here knows what size would fit on a 5x10 trailer. Before driving the trailer with dry rotted tires on the interstate, I wanted to have an idea of what I needed and possibly order them ahead of time.

Take pictures of the trailer and tires then head off to the trailer dealer with out the trailer.

Measure the distance between lug nuts, note if 4 or 5 lugnuts, and go to Tractor Supply, Walmart, etc and look for tires and wheels combo. If wheels are rusted I'd replace those also. Ive found replacing tire and wheel is sometimes cheaper, plus all new tire, wheel, valve stem. Also check to see if hubs have grease, may need repacking if sitting and water got into the hub.

If I have this figured out right, I need to replace the existing tires (personal car tires) that are on the trailer as they aren’t the right kind of tires (ST rated).

I’ll have to measure the distance between two of the lug nuts as some sites said that matters(?). I agree with your recommendation of replacing the tire and wheel as the rim is rusty and no way maintenance was followed.

yes, from memory, some lug nuts are 4" center to center, some are 4.25 or 4.5, can't remember. I bought a trailer that had a different pattern from the others, could not swap spares between trailers.

Thanks all for the advice.

I ended up ordering ST 205/75d15 tires (thanks Amazon) for the trailer (in case anyone needs to order tires and is in a similar position as I was). Also replaced the wheels to get a completely fresh start.

ST are tires meant for trailers as they have added strength on the walls.

One day I may make it to the big leagues and get an RV but until then, I wish you all the best!

It’s something I’ve thought about but never spent the time to be serious about it. I’m a military brat so I’m not originally from here. I moved here from Utah (Ogden and then Logan).

Are you a KY Colonel?
