New Full Time RV’er -- Cold Weather

My wife and bought a 2018 Grand Design Imagine 2670MK. We live in central Alberta. Next week we’re headed south for the winter. We have friends in North Carolina. It does get cold in NC, but NOTHING like in central Alberta!

Any suggestions on full time rv’ing in cold weather?

I have a lot of other questions, but I’ll get to those later.

Thx!!

Blaine

Hi Blaine

Glad to have you here in the forum with us.

When we get a cold air mass here they usually refer to it as an Alberta Clipper. I always used to ask what do people in Alberta call it?
As long as you have electricity the cold won't be a problem. As you said it doesn't get that cold in NC with the exception of the mountains. If you are staying in the Piedmont or the coast you should have any great concerns. Just keep an eye on the weather forecasts.

Happy Trails!!!

We live in the Piedmont of NC and all though it won't be anything like Alberta, you will have to worry about freezing water lines, etc. We wake up to several, below freezing days every winter beginning early December and rolling around to about early March. Winter before we had several days of single digit temps. The coastal area does much better. But it is cold enough we are looking at property further south ourselves for retirement and full-time RVing in the winter. Not trying to worry anyone, but don't expect sultry, Florida-ish weather, lol.

One thing I discovered by accident while in Colorado is to turn the A/C-heater knob to the OFF position. We were parked at a RV park during a cold snap and I sat down in the passenger seat to check the map for the next day and noticed a draft coming in through the A/C vents. I had left the knob in e VENT position when we parked which allowed the cold air to flow through to the inside of the RV. Turning the knob to OFF stopped the draft.

Yes, it gets cold, even in the south. We full-timed in our Montana High Country for 8 months in Kentucky while waiting for our house in Washington to sell. Electric heaters, a heated fresh water hose, heat tape on the pipes, and occasional use of the propane furnace were all that was required.

Congratulations on your new Grand Design!

No, it's not the same engine that had all the issues in semis.

Don't believe everything you read about our coast. Somebody (who shall remain nameless, but her initials are SWMBO) decided we needed a trip to Ocracoke Island. Ended up being below freezing for two of the three days with one not getting above 15. We had to spend an extra day as the ferries weren't able to run, and the second day they were delayed. I have pictures of the above nameless person standing on the box taking pictures in 25 degree temps and 15 knot winds, but that isn't what made him / her sick. We took delivery of ours March 1 this year and later went camping outside of Raleigh at Jordan Lake and I got up to a winter wonderland and got to drive home in it.

Their is a serious thread running on the class A board about winter issues and tanks / plumbing. My one point that I am seeing with ours now that we are getting into our first real cooler stretch and I would take something about the consistency of a hospital blanket and tuck it under the bottom edge of the slides as that seems to be a large part of our colder air drafts. Today I also had the lines and connections installed connecting ours to the house LP tank.
