When going to AZ we always went I-5 or 99 and visited friends in Fresno. Now I guess I'll go another route and miss visiting the friends. I suppose I could do like the last time there, put the handguns in the safe and leave the loaded KSG under the bed, but I don't want to spend my RV'ing money where the Constitution is ignored.

the OP mentioned in his post that the HP will want to search the MH..in no way should anybody give that permission even if you have nothing to hide as maybe when you had it serviced some one drop something, ya know..if they really have probabl cause then they can get a search warrent, but they do need probable cause...

Ha! In California, it isn't probable cause anymore, it's just because.
Seems like there was a Supreme Court decision or something where RVs have to be treated as a home, not as a vehicle, so a search warrant would be necessary before searching a RV. I could be mistaken.

Betty and I have RVed in Canada, Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Turkey, Morocco, Holland, Belgium, France, Andorra, Spain, Portugal, England, Wales, Scotland, Faroe Islands, Iceland, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Switzerland, Austria, Macendonia, Kosovo, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Croatia, Albania, Montenegro and Australia and of course the USA - in many cases for several months and sometimes for more than a year at a time, and lived in China for two years, and in only one of all of those countries have we ever had to consider what the gun laws were and how they might impinge on our safety as RVers..
I think I like the new laws in CA as they measurably improve the safety of our RV lifestyle.

Well. As it happens I am one of those people who does not like guns and wishes nothing to do with them.. HOWEVER for the record, I respect your right to feel differently and to carry guns, IN A RESPONSIBLE MANNER.
California has done some strange things Law Enforcement wise. At least one driver was given a ticked for Impeding Traffic (Driving too slow) He was going 55 in a 55 zone... (It was dismissed with a stern warning).
I am not going to comment on the gun law save to say the advice we gove to UNIFORMED POLICE officers when traveling out of state is leave your guns in the post armory. Any out of state travel EVEN IN UNIFORM. So... You may consider that as you wish.

WOW!!!!!!! I think that this thread has transgressed into CA BASHING!!!
That's too bad. Uninformed respondents - as usual - have it wrong.
My wife and I recently engaged in a presentation by local southern CA police officers in the crime unit. When asked they responded that:
1. In your MH - behind your driving seats - is very specifically considered your home. Carrying a weapon is allowed; LOADED.
2. If - as also in your S&M home - you shoot an intruder (best to make sure the intruder cannot refute anything you say), they do not necessarily have to be inside your physical home (but should at least be on your property). IF you can prove that they had intent to cause you bodily harm.
3. Yes, agreed that CA is getting a bit goofier than usual - with Gov. Brown doing his thing - we are not really that bad. We still rank as the sixth (6th) largest economy in the world: "The U.S. has the world's largest economy with a GDP of $17.9 trillion. China placed second with a GDP of $10.9 trillion, followed by Japan, Germany and the United Kingdom. After those countries, the Golden State took sixth place with a GDP of $2.4 trillion."
So, while I do understand you desire to avoid us, we're not all bad.

NOPE. All their new laws have done is to remove any fear of opposition to the criminal's mis-deeds..
I prefer to dry camp so the nearest "Official" help would be hours away..And DW really does not like snakes... therefore....
I as well could be armed.
My camping $$'s can go to AZ or NV just as easily..

Having lived in Calif and Canada, if HANDGUN laws were stronger in ALL states like Calif maybe we wouldn't need to be so afraid all the time.
Research Australia and what they did there.
Bravo to Calif

The rub is that the CA law, and most laws about traveling with firearms, don't address RVs. The law about what you can do in your home is quite different than what you can do in a vehicle. I am not aware of the referenced Supreme Court ruling. Can you provide details?

Just for fun, We are also in the "avoid CA crowd". Last year when we traveled from KY to WA by way of AZ, we avoided CA because of the high fuel prices, and their (perceived) stance on personally owned weapons being carried in our Coach. Since I'm pretty sure that if I am in court, I can't use someones post on IRV2 attributing something to the "SO CAL officers in a crime unit presentation", I would be interested in the ACTUAL LAW that allows me to carry a loaded weapon behind my driving seats in my motor home. No need to quote it here, just please give me the legal reference (CA penal code or whatever), I can look it up on the internet!
Thanks, and I'm looking forward to the reference. Without documentation, it's just he said, JUDGE SAYS! I'm pretty sure that in that instance, what the JUDGE SAYS will rule!

Yep gronotte, I'm pretty sure I would feel EXTREMELY SAFE traveling in my motor home in, say, Chicago, since they have possibly the most strict handgun laws in the United States! So it MUST be the SAFEST city in the country, right?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't there some national headlines about that recently?!?

Your RV is your castle even in CA. As long as you don't go waving a gun around, you will be fine.
If stopped for a traffic violation, don't complicate the experience discussing guns you may have in the closet with the police.

Well, this just cleared up one thing.
We (BIL Matt and I plus spice) were setting up a PCH tour. DW and I did about 150 miles of the south end years ago and she wants to do it all. Too Bad.
That plan had us start north in San Diego and then turn toward the east in Port Washington. There was a planned match in somewhere Idaho. Matt would want to bring his Colt 15 Gold Cup. (He is national status.) There is no part of that piece that fits in their new laws. This plan will have to change that as the law as I read it no longer allows any "Peaceable Transit" as outlined by the federal register.
Sorry California, it looks like we have to travel and leave money other places.... That doesn't really bother me as I can't think of anyplace else that I can spend that kind of money and get so little for it.
I won't write what I think about who exempted themselves as that would be a crass political statement.
Frank
