New to RVing

Just purchased a Ram 1500, 5.7, V-8, Hemi, 3.21 axle, and now looking for either a TT or 5th wheel. I'm some what confused on what my truck can safely tow! The towing guide I looked at indicated about 8200 lbs, but other guides I gave checked indicate 6700 lbs. Does anyone out there have a similar truck, and if do can you tell me what the true towing capacity is, and what kind of trailer you pull?

Here is a VIN decoder, it says Chevy but it will work on Dodge.

VIN Decoder - Chevrolet Forum - Chevy Enthusiasts Forums

Type in your VIN # and then go to the specifications and it will tell you what the towing capacity.

Towing weight can vary depending on axle ratio, braking capacity, transmission etc.

So I plugged in the VIN and trailerin capacity indicated 4680min/8240 max. Does that mean my tow capacity is 8240?

2 or 4 doors? Six or 8 speed transmission? 2 or 4 wheel drive? Long or short bed? They all change the equation.

Really? Can I ask where you got those numbers from? Sounds great, but I just want to make sure!

Assuming you have the hitch capacity for it, your tow capacity is:

The GCWR minus the tow vehicle's actual weight when ready to tow.

It's the third one from the top in "RAM" trucks on the right column. Footnotes a6 and d are for six speed auto and 3.21 axle ratio.

"1500 SB 2WD 5.7L V-8 7,160 (a6,d)"

As Cat320 says, 7160 is is most you can tow given the conditions under which Ram calculates the number. Most often it's something like driver and 1/2 tank of gas. Everything you put into the truck will reduce that weight--things like a passenger, receiver for trailer hitch, and anything you put into the cab or bed.

If it were me, I'd be looking for a trailer with a GVWR in the 6000 lbs range. There are 5th wheels you can tow, but you have to look at pin weight compared to the GVWR of your truck which is another calculation entirely.
