You can do as you please, but if you leave your portable genset unattended you may very well return (or awaken) to no generator. There were 7 generators stolen in Quartzsite in 2009 and all of them were cabled and locked. The locks were still there but the cables were cut in the blink of an eye.

I would think that some relatively heavy chain with a good key lock would work better than a cable. Granted that the chain could still be cut with the right tool, but maybe the thief would go to look for an easier target.

I have heard of cases where the people were inside with genset running. When it stopped they thought it ran out of gas and didn't go right out. When they did it was gone.

A fellow I sailed with said his former employer, a jeweler, had brazed injector razor blades, inconspicuously, onto his spinner hub caps to prevent their continued theft. However, he soon began to suffer broken lights, dents and scratched paint.
