I take it you are talking about a portable gen. I'd chain it up if you cannot lock it into a secure compartment. After all, they are "portable".

X2.
Keep in mind if a determined thief wants your genset it will be stolen! The most we can do is make stealing ours so time-consuming they move along to an easier target, where they are less likely to meet the long arm of the law.

A mean Pitt Bull tied to it would probably work.

I made several brackets for friends where the gen. bolted to a base plate and slid into the hitch receiver. A locking hitch pin and a secure gen.
On some we added an attachable shield for rain.
This also solved the problem of running a gen. on the ground and pulling in dirt.

Or you could put a sign on it that says: "Protected by Smith & Wesson."

IF you don't lock it up you better put a sign on it that says "This is a lemon" and paint it yellow.

I have always said that a lock is made to keep an honest person honest, a crook will figure out how to get what he wants anyway!
Keeping it out of sight may be the best way to keep it.

Even more stupid for being the shooter for a generator.
