Newmar Canyon Star Aux fuel tank won't fill

I feel really stupid posting this but I'm at my wits end with this. For those that are not familiar this is Newmar's toyhauler RV (2014 CanyonStar 3920), which has a fuel station that has a 30gal auxiliary tank.

Here is my problem. I cannot get fuel into the tank (I told you this was stupid). When I try to pump fuel into the tank, no matter how slowly, the fuel ends up coming back out of the filler hose fill point.

Here is what I have confirmed:
- I have confirmed that the tank is empty
- that the breather line is not clogged (I disconnected the line blew into it and the gasoline in the filler line came spraying out.
- That the there is an unobstructed path to the tank from the filler hose. I used an electricians snake and was able to tap the bottom of the tank.
- When at the station I made sure the RV was level.
- I do not see any sag points in the filler line, however the angle of descent to the tank is very, very shallow.

Here is what I have done so far:
Not wanting to dump a ton of fuel on the ground at a station I got a funnel so I could test what was going on at home. I tried putting fuel in with the RV leveled. The fuel spilled out of the fill point before the funnel (5") emptied. I then lifted the side with the filler on it to a slight angle, the fuel still spilled out. I then lifted it to an extreme angle (where the steps were almost hitting the ground) and still the fuel ran out.

I called my RV service center, and they had no idea of what might be going on. I've tried twice to contact Newmar and have yet to get anyone to call me back that has a clue about the auxiliary fuel system.

According to the laws of physics the gasoline should have at least flowed into the tank when the RV was on a steep angle. What am I missing? I'm getting ready to go on a long cross country trip and would really like to use this feature. I kick myself in the butt for not testing it when it was under warranty but I honestly never thought I would have a use for it.

Any help, ideas, tests would be greatly appreciated.

Is there a gauge on it. When we were looking at the Canyon Star Toy hauler, our dealer joked that it came with a full tank of gas, even the auxiliary one. Maybe it was full when you bought it.

I have knocked on the bottom of it (compared the sound to the main tank in front of it which is full). The electricians snake came out dry and when I turn the pump on it cannot get a prime. I'm not sure of any other test I can perform. BTW, that was the first thing my mechanic asked me. lol

Can you see the whole filler line it sounds like it may be kinked or pinched somewhere. Even with a shallow descent, it should back up like that. How long does it take the gas you put in the filler tube to go down.

The gasoline stays in the filler hose and if its making it to the tank, its taking hours. The hose is fairly short (3') and goes straight to the top of the tank with two support straps keeping it off of the frame where it passes through.

Also, just to add this to the thread, when I turn the pump on, the fuel gauge for the tank says its empty.

Then there has to be an air intake blockage then. When you said you blow into the breather tube that the gas comes out of the filler hose, could there be a check valve in there and it is on backwards, or stuck. It has to be something simple, I doubt it has anything to do with the level of the MH ect.

The thought of a check valve crossed my mind when I was putting the electricians snake into the tank, however the snake came back out (twice) with no snag or resistance. I'm guessing I'm going to have to drop the tank to see what is going on with the tanks intake. Before doing that, I'm going to wait to hear back from Newmar in case they've seen this before. I can see it still being an air issue. The snake can go in unobstructed and there would be no pressure holding it back. But when putting liquid in, as it flows it takes up all the space that the air can flow. Is there a way to put the breather tube on backwards and then try it. Good luck, this sure is a strange one. Keep us posted.

I think I found the problem and of course its simple. It appears that the fuel filler neck is angled slightly down and what is happening is the fuel is having to travel up the filler neck and then down the filler hose to the tank. I adjusted the angle of the filler neck to point it upward and it seems to work -- at least with the funnel. I'm going to test it later this week at a fuel station.

Most likely this happened when my RV service company applied a recall fix on the fuel station which required them to install a plate above the filler point.

Great, glad you found the fix, sounds like you just needed a little room for air as the fuel goes in. Good luck I hope that is the fix.
