Yesterday we parked near what had to be at least a million dollar super C. Painted over the side door, in gold letters, was, " Not for Hire". Having never owned a rig like that, and never will, I have to assume that these people are constantly bothered by people wanting to rent or hire their coaches. I feel sorry for them having to paint a sign on their coaches to keep the riff raff away,,, just saying.

It would make sense if it were a truck, which requires a DOT# to carry freight. If a company owned their own truck and carried their own supplies, they would be "not for hire" and disallowed from carrying freight for anyone else. Being an RV, it makes no sense, but maybe the owners thought they were supposed to label it as such. You can buy decals that say "Not for Hire" at some truck stops.

I believe he's talking about a toterhome. Owned by a company but for company use needs to be labeled not for hire so they don't have to stop at scale houses.

It's pretty common to see it around racing venues. Many race teams use Truck conversions, toter homes, and tractor trailers, for race car haulers, but consider them non-commercial I think it is more of a statement about being designated as an RV, rather than fending off people trying to hire them.

The posting is required for the unit to be designated as non-commercial. That means they don't have to follow all the DOT rules--no commercial drivers' license--no stops at scales--no logbook.

In many states simply posting "Not for Hire" means nothing. In fact many troopers target Toter homes, Semi's, and occasionally DP's and large trailers with this verbiage displayed knowing the vehicle is likely over 26001#'s and is subject to the troopers interpretation of the DOT law on the side of the road. A "hobby" racer that doesn't answer all of the questions that are posed to him correctly at a traffic stop can be found to be a commercial vehicle and required to be DOT compliant... with or without the verbiage displayed. This is a very common topic in the racing, rodeo, and car show world and a source of much discussion and confusion regarding the letter of the law.

The "Not For Hire" signage is just one piece of evidence that this is a non-commercial vehicle, i.e. is titled and registered as a "private" passenger vehicle rather than for commercial-use. By itself it is meaningless, but it advertises the private status in hope of avoiding inquires from police and DOT.

There may be some states that require the sign if a Class 6-7-8 truck is titled for private rather than the usual commercial use, but mostly it is just the driver trying to avoid the attention that otherwise might apply.
