So how bad can only 12" bridge clearance difference be? LOL (Warning- bad music).

That's one way to remove your ac units for service and replacement. LOL
When I was at the Newmar factory last April I saw a really nice 08 or 09 Mountain aire which was there for shaving the roof like the 5th wheel in this.

The rental trucks were expected.

But the 5th wheel at the end really hurt!

I24 Exit 152 Kimball/S Pittsburg/Jasper in TN had a bridge like that. There were numerous "scalpings" because while the bridge was the height stated, that was only because the road "dipped" directly under the bridge. Short trucks/Rvs were not a problem.... it was the long ones! This is a primary road that many semi trucks use to get into North Alabama and to get to Shaw (carpet factory) and Lodge (cast iron). You might be able to clear the "chains (If you hit them you were too tall to go under the bridge... of course you also had no place to turn around once you got to the chains).

“The new bridge on I-24 will be higher to allow for safer passage of large trucks on U.S. 72, which will improve access to I-24 for many businesses in Marion County,” said Commissioner Nicely. “The project will also improve the overall function of the interchange, reducing congestion and making it safer for all motorists.”

Dement Construction, LLC from Jackson, Tenn. is the contractor for the $13.5 million project that will modify the interchange and replace the bridge on I-24 at Exit 152, which is the Kimball/South Pittsburg exit. The new bridge will be built with a higher grade to provide adequate clearance beneath the bridge and comply with today's design standards. It will also alleviate the problems that have faced the existing I-24 bridge over U.S. 72, which was constructed in 1965 and has been struck several times by log trucks that are illegally overloaded with logs stacked too high. In addition to the new bridge, a new westbound off-ramp will be constructed and all the off-ramps will be signalized. "

Almost all low clearance under passes like this are railroad tracks. The railroads were built long before tall trucks were running the roads. The railroad is not about to raise the track so the only way to fix a low clearance underpass is to dig out the road for about 1000 feet and then you have a drainage problem.

I like the way that some them didn't just nudge the bridge, or scrape through with loss of paint - they hit it at speed and with about a foot too little clearance!! Great judges of height. Having said that, I just remembered that I need to get up on the RV and repair some of the dents in the covers...

The reason they did not hurt the bridge was that the owner (railroad) put a steel beam in front of the bridge to take the impact.

Don't forget, sometimes they repave the road raising it up a couple of inches and neglect to remark the clearences.

On a couple of those real close ones the train was on the tracks, if they had waited till it was gone they might have cleared.

It looked like the steel beam was hanging much lower than the bridge which seems ridiculous on two counts - most of those trucks would have made it under the bridge if the beam wasn't there and is it 11' 8" under the beam or under the bridge?
