We're ready to order a TireMinder 1A1 TPMS and wondered if we needed to order 20 spare O-rings with it.

What do the O-rings do and how often do they need to be replaced?

O rings prevent contaminants from entering the sensor. If the O ring looks intact when you take them out they can most likely be reused. However because of their small cost, I would replace them.

We have more trouble with the "caps" breaking/cracking than "O" rings going bad...

I've been wrong before but I thought the O rings seal the sensor on the valve stem. If so replacement depends on how often you remove them for changing tire pressure.

On the tire minder they are tiny thin rings that seal the cap to the sensor. I have removed the caps and replaced them several times without the o rings failing. The key is to not tighten them like a gorilla. They just need to be snug. I did have a battery leak in one of the sensors which reminds me I have to call them for a replacement. Even though it still works, I think it will be a problem down the road. Love the system. It works great.

For what its worth, the Tire Minder people are wonderful, but I finally turned off our Tire Minder TPMS - too many false alarms and even while parked it would randomly go off at all hours of the day or night.

Just one example: pulling out of a freeway rest area it tells me I've got a rapid deflation on a steer tire. Funny, no pulling or other strange or troublesome handling issues and using that same device I confirm the pressures are all normal. I continue to monitor the pressures until the next opportunity to pull off the highway and confirm all is OK - and it was. That was the last straw.

Again, the Tire Minder folks were very nice in their efforts to help solve our issues with the unit, they sent me a new "repeater", and even a totally new unit, all to no avail.

Once someone can convince me of some other brands reliability I'll install another unit. Until then I'm back to relying on checking the pressures manually before every trip and visual inspections at every stop.

On the TST system there are 2 totally different type O rings. One seals the unit from the elements when you change the batteries and the other seals the sensor to the valve stem. I changed the smaller of the two when I changed the batteries. The other one that seals the sensor to valve stems are original. I have another set ready for the next battery change and only keep a couple of the valve stem ones on hand.

The ONLY TPMS made in America is Pressure Pro. I think all others are made in China. I have a TST system-made in China, but it hasn't failed since it was purchased in 2008.

I haven't had a problem with false alarms. Ours works magnificently. The only problem we have experienced was one of the original batteries leaking in the sensor. I keep meaning to call and always forget. Im calling tomorrow before i forget again! LOL!

Which doesn't make the PP any better.

Ex PP distributor and dealer. Gave up on the PP and bought a TST 507 system.

What I'd REALLY like to see is TST (or ANY maker) come out with a unit that will not only read the sensors they supply, but also read the sensors installed in cars as well - then we wouldn't need to get extra sensors for our toads!

I know the logistics of this are pretty overwhelming, but the first company that successfully does this will most likely OWN the market!

And sell a lot less sensors. Not much percentage in that.

Plus, it's not just reading the car-makers sensors. Those sensors may not transmit far enough to be picked up if the receiver is in the front of a motorhome and the sensor on a towed car.

An idea that might fly is a gadget that rides in the car, reads the car sensors, and rebroadcasts to another TPMS further away. Would probably need a version for each major car maker, and probably every brand of TPMS receiver would need its own repeater.
