Good point Don! BTW I use Onan on the Geny, Cat on the Cat...

The filter wrench I got from Napa would not work. I have one ordered from Camping World.

Any farm store such as Farm and Fleet, Tractor Supply, etc. will have the filter wrench you need, at a much better price, but you could always order one from Onan, and pay three times as much for the same wrench run on the same manufacturing line! Rail!

When I ordered the wrench from CW is shows a delivery date of 10 to 14 days. This was long, but I could deal with it. But when the order was processed it shows the span to be 4 to 6 weeks. This was unacceptable so I cancelled the order.

I then found the wrench on Ebay for about the same price (under $20 including shipping) and it will be delivered next week. The prices for this was crazy from $7 to $34.

I got my wrench yesterday. I did not think about what type of oil to get. Should I switch to synthetic like I did for the engine? I plan on getting the weight per the chart on the side of the generator. Any particular brands? In our less than two years of ownership we have only used it once other than the monthly start up and run.

I removed the filter this morning and immediately saw some difference between the Onan filter and the Napa filter. The Napa filter was about 1/2" shorter which would make it very hard to install and uninstall. I have an Onan filter ordered from Amazon now.

The last time I stopped at the Cummins/Onan dealer to get oil for the generator they sold me Valvoline Heavy Duty Diesel 15w-40. So that is what I will stick with but I will buy it at the auto parts store next time.

I would venture to bet that the majority of diesel engine owners use one of two very popular oils, Chevron Delo or Rotella. Both of these are fine for diesel generators. It makes life simpler to use the same oil in your diesel generator as you do in your diesel engine. The Chevron Delo is always available at Costco and the Rotella is always available at Walmart.

My generator is a gas generator and the preferred viscosity is 15w40 and I think that is why the diesel oil.
