Oil changes, types of oil
I recently purchased a used motor home that was taken care of very well...a 2000, 34 foot, fleetwood flair with a V 10 gas engine...has 44,000 miles on it....the oil is fine but I don't know if its conventional oil, or other..
I plan on changing it prior to leaving on a three month 4000 mile ( at least ) trip....what would be the best oil to use and should I add any additives ? Thanks..

In the V10 we used to have I used the same. Mobil 1 5W20. I believe the manual called for that weight when using synthetic. Changed it yearly. Might have been overkill but by looking at it couldn't imagine what the cost would be to yank that out of an F350 chassis.
Have a DP now so it is Rotella T 15W40 in the Cummins and Onan. Still go one year but the manual actually calls for 10,000 or yearly.

Since Amsoil was already brought up, Amsoil Signature Series 5w20 and Amsoil oil filter for warranted 15,000 miles up to 1 year and support a site sponsor. Available at wholesale. It's what I've run in my V10 for years. No additives needed or recommended.

Here in Florida, we use Mobile 1 10-30 in our 8.1 with a 1qt filter. No additives. Bob

Same here except for the rotella. Change the V10 oil every 5k. Generator oil as per manufactor schedule, still 15W40 though.

Mobil one synthetic at Walmart will be your best price for oil.
I use the 15,000 extended synthetic.
I do not use additives. I would use the weight recommended by Ford.

There is nothing wrong with Mobil 1 products. Mobil 1 recommends/warranties only if you follow Ford's oil change mileage recommendation listed in your owners manual for your V10, which I believe is only 3,000 miles, so you should change your oil at least once during your trip to be eligible for Mobil's warranty. That is why I recommended AMSOIL's warranted 15,000 mile up to 1 year oil and filter for your 4,000 mile plus trip. And comparable AMSOIL at wholesale will cost less than Mobil 1 at Walmart, and definitely less per mile with their 15,000 mile oil which would be 5 Mobil 1 oil changes for warranty.

I use the Mobil one rated to go for 15,000 miles between changes and Mobil does warranty it.
To buy Amsoil at wholesale you have be a dealer. I used to be a dealer.
$7 a quart for Mobil.
How much is Amsoil a quart to a person who is not a dealer?

The current API standards for oil are so high and base stocks from every producer so improved today that there is very little difference in any oil you can buy for a gas engine (different for diesel engines). 25% of the product in an oil can consists of a variety of additives so there is no need to ad more to what is already there.
The only advantage for synthetics is in very low temperature operation, i.e. 20 degrees or colder. Otherwise there is no difference in engine protection. There may be a mileage improvement but it is going to be too slight to measure. It is highly profitable for the companies that produce it.
All of today's oils are good for a minimum of 7500 miles between changes and most will easily take you 10,000 miles. You can change more often but it will not benefit the engine or the environment and the oil companies are already making ridiculous profits as they have for the past 50 years.
With diesel engines produced after 2007 there are decided advantages to certain oil formulations but again no advantages to synthetics except extreme cold operation. With a diesel the highest ranked by fleet operators and lab tests by Fleetguard is the Valvoline Premium Blue which you can get at your local Sears store (along with DEF fluid).

Hi Arch.
This is what Mobil 1 Extended Protection 15,000 mile oil says:"Follow your owner’s manual if the vehicle is operated in any of the following severe services: racing or commercial applications including taxis, limousines, etc.; frequent towing or hauling; extremely dusty or dirty conditions; or under excessive idling conditions." Ford's owners manual says 3,000 miles for the V10. AMSOIL's lowest level full synthetic OE (Original Equipment) has the same mileage restriction as Mobil 1 oils, but AMSOIL's Signature Series and oil filter warranties for 15,000 severe service miles up to 1 year such as a motorhome. That is the main reason I use it in my V10 motorhome, saves me lots of time and money.
You can buy AMSOIL at wholesale and not be a Dealer. I offer free wholesale accounts to those who have a qualified business. MSRP prices are available on my website. Wholesale prices are 20-30% below that. For those who do not have a qualified business, you can become a trial Preferred Customer for 6 months for $10 which gets you a monthly AMSOIL Magazine, a wholesale price book, and some other items.
I hope that answers your questions.
