Now if it were the other way around would this dealer kick $23k to them to make it right? I doubt it very much. I would be walking!!

They do have it right, it's the government agencies that get it wrong. Federal law REQUIRES that it be registered according to the Manufacturers Certificate Of Origin that ships with the vehicle. For some reason some states still go by the chassis vin which can be different.
Waiting to hear what the original dealer has to say.

X2 - VIN one year - coach the next. Manufacturer represented and dealer sold new as later year - MH titled from VIN. Did not catch it at purchase. Actually not for several years. Was angry at the time - but at bottom the Motorhome year is all that really matters when push comes to shove. The completed product didn't exist in the VIN year - only in the coach year. Dealers know this but will use it against you - just don't let them. I know easier said than done.

Note: on the driver side near the gas fill and beneath the driver window there is a plate on my 2008 Bounder. It includes the FIN (Fleetwood Identification Number) and below that Manufacturer Date
Month 1 Year 2008
That pretty much settles it for me in a sale or trade - regardless of title or VIN date - although I am lucky this time - title and model year match.

There may be a tag on OPs friends rig somewhere. If so - no matter what anyone says - it's affixed to the MH by the mfg and pretty hard to dispute.

Our unit is registered as an 94 even though the chassis is dated as a 93. The paperwork for the unit from Winnebago states that the information on the chassis build date is provided for engine and related work. The wall tags claim it's a 1994.

Does that clear or muddy the world.

The funny thing is, when ordering a new 2010 a lot of folks were looking for a manufacturer that still had some 2009 chassis (non DEF) left that they could build their 2010 coach on. Some manufacturers intentionally ordered a lot more of the pre-DEF chassis expecting to carry them to be in demand even in the new model year.

I expect this will come up many times again as those rigs start getting sold or traded in.

Some states are different, but in my state, the ONLY number that counts is the one on the title...that is the "official" year.

I forgot in the above post to mention that there is a builders decal on the left side of the main entrance that claims Build date 01-94.
