OK, this is bad....

My friends got a NICE used Phaeton MH about a year ago.... only been out in in a few times because the dealer they bought it from promised to do some repairs as part of the deal....

first issue, they gave them time to do it and it took 4 months for small things....

Unfortunately, they had an accident and made the poor decision to bring it back to them and they've had it since Oct 2012... another 4 months and counting...

Well, now the BAD part...
looking at a newer coach at another dealer the other day, they got serious and got papers drawn up and all, gave them the vin of the trade in, etc... and the new dealers say this coach is a year model older than you said !

Well, long story longer.... the paperwork said 1 year newer, the old dealer said one year newer, but the new dealer and the mfg said a year older !

They are SICK as this makes the deal a $23k poorer deal !!!

What's their recourse other than an attorney ? Would the Consumer Protection Agency help ? (novel concept that they would help a consumer, but????)

I won't mention the dealers name yet until we see their final response...
but this is sickening !

If he can can verify that VIN determines the coach is i.e. 2011 and Sales Order signed by selling dealer states coach is a (i.e.) 2012 then your friend has an actionable issue. If it were me I would get advice from an attorney to substantiate my position and verify I had an actionable issue then sit and have a serious conversation with selling dealer.
That's what I would do......YMMV

Same old story, one is the chassis build date, the other is the coach build date. Really seems to depend on who you believe and what the govt. agencies use. The coach build date and stated model year are "Supposed" to be the actual year.

Motorhome model years usually start in May or June, and chassis model years usually start in September or October, so it is not uncommon to use a chassis that is one model year older than the motorhome being built at least for part of the year. If the motorhome was built in June, 2010 for example, it would be a 2010 model. Even if the chassis had been built the same month, the chassis would be a 2009 model.

If the owner still has questions, he can call Tiffin in Red Bay. If he gives them the chassis VIN, they can tell him exactly when his coach and chassis were built.

My 2010 Fleetwood Bounder is built on a 2011 chassis, sitting on 2009 tires...go figure.

I hope they checked the KBB or NADA book. $23K seems like a lot for one year. Maybe the new dealer is making a bigger deal than it really is.

Tell your friend to call Tiffin with the VIN number. That is the definitive answer. Tiffin can give him a written statement of the build date and year. That is what matters.

I know there's been a few threads about this...there was one not long ago that had the definitive legal sources defining that the coachbuilder, not the chassis, determines the year.

I went through this with my coach. A phone call to Tiffin took care of it.

Appreciate all the responses...

I told them to get a copy of the MCO (Mfg Certificate of Origin) and it and Tiffin said 08 based on serial #...
The title, etc... says 09....

the reason this even came up was the front generator cap ordered did not fit the 2008 because the repair shop ordered a 2009 front cap - so having the minor accident actually became a good thing

SOMEONE along the line either accidently or fraudulently changed some years...

if the mco says 2008,
and the original sale title says 2009, it was the first sale...

The current paperwork they have says 2009 on the title...

so someone is going to get a demand letter from his attorney !

fyi, they did look at the nada guides and it WAS 23k between the two years!

so the saga continues...
I spoke to them today and they've calmed down from it and being very business like about it... after all, it's only a 'thing' and not worth making yourself miserable about it...

I mean the coach is a GEE-OR-GEOUS coach no matter what the year and only had 9k miles on it....

thanks again for the comments ! I think they have recourse given the paperwork they have...

Ya think?

But that would require us to believe that the new dealer had some motivation to convince a prospective customer that his trade-in is worth less than the customer thinks it is!

What are the chances of that happening?

Hear where you are coming from...

but thought I stated that the MCO says 2008...
which is what the new dealer found out and different from the title
which says 2009 and what the 1st selling dealer sold it as,
so the 2nd dealer is representing it correctly (so far )

We haven't cornered the first dealer yet

One thing about this whole RV thing is that as much as these things cost you would think that the dealers and the Manufactures would get all of this mess right. It seems that just about all of us has these problems at one time or another.Good Luck and Many Safe and Happy Travels
