This is a 4 door Norcold in a National Dolphin. It ain't coming out to get filled with water and so forth. Because of the 4 compartments, we were fine on a multi week trip just using the inoffensive remaining 3.
Since that was the case, and the freezer box in question has no seams, seals, or gaps for goo to have crept through (in other words, I can fill it with a gallon of water and it'll still have a gallon a week or 3 later - no where for the liquid to go), I will continue to attack it in place.
Since I'm not retired, returning from a couple of weeks off means I am time strapped, and this will not get dedicated effort during the week.
Thus for opening salvo I'm going to do the coffee thing, and tell it to think about what it's done, with follow up for the weekend.
Thanks everyone. I know I've been quiet, but I can't get back to the forum during the day.

Coffee's been in there all week on a bed of newspaper.
Now every time I open that section, it smells like a Juan Valdez commercial.
Tempted to just leave the coffee in there.
We're taking off again a week from tomorrow, so I should probably take out the bed of coffee for a while and see where I'm at, but I keep coming back to the thought that I like where I am at currently, so why not stay with it awhile.
Maybe I can compromise and leave a small open container of coffee in there.
More to follow.

Hold your nerve and wipe everything with EverClear. It should work. Drink excess and odor should be un-noticeable.

Don't use an ozone machine! I'm a restoration contractor. Ozone will affect all the latex seals on the fridge and they'll fall to pieces.
You might want to try going to a supplier like ZEP and ask for an enzyme to counteract protein. Then thoroughly clean the compartment. It's still no guarantee but you may end up with something you can live with.

I had to look that one up, and I agree, drink this stuff at 95% alcohol and you won't care if it smells! Drink a lot of Everclear and you may ever care again about anything. Kind of like Moonshine!

Just a question - how does water drain from the freezer when it defrosts?

I dunno. I started looking closer and I think there is a real tight seam, but I can't get my grape in there far enough to be sure.
I can tell you I've never noticed frost in there (caveat, not my usual dept), and that I poured a mixture of water/bleach in that compartment and let it set a while whilst I did other stuff. It didn't go anywhere whilst setting......

On my Norcold 1200 series there is no drain. I mop it up till it's dry.
I leave my all four doors open when not in use.

Regarding your first comments, that's been my observation.
Regarding the second statement, well, that's been my intent as well. I betcha after this I get real good at some of these details, too.

Got it. .

Wait a minute,if tomato juice gets rid of skunk smell, what about making a skunk spray into the fridge, then wash it with tomato juice? Not the skunk, the fridge.
Seems to me that at that point you will no longer smell the old food smell.
I am very sorry,as I just could not resist saying that. I most likely would scrap the fridge, seriously.

Or not.
I don't accept your syllogism either.
Let's call that plan Q. I'm currently on plan B and loving it. I suspect Q ain't gonna survive the jury cut.

I don't think have to replace the fridge. You can try a lot of different things for the cost of replacement.
Plastics will hold an odor but with some proper cleaning and deodorizing, you should be able to get it back to something livable.
