Oops! Locked my wife out...do they make a lockbox for storing a spare key in bumper?
We are camping at the beach. Wife was still asleep when I headed out with my surfboard, locked the door from the outside (regular key lock, not the deadbolt), and when I came back two hours later, she was sitting outside in her nightgown with the dog.
Apparently, when I lock the top lock, she can still open from the inside, but it does not unlock the door, so after she closed it she was locked out.
So, we need some sort of lock box for outside the trailer, with a combination lock, that we can store a spare key in.
It would be REALLY nice if it was small and fit in the square bumper on the back.
Any suggestions?
I did a google search, and only got big lock boxes for the front for the batteries...

Only lock the deadbolt when you leave. That should solve the basic issue.
There are all kinds of lock boxes but I can not recall one with a combination. Probably can be found though. I have seen magnetic ones in the automotive section.
Other option is to put a pocket on the nightgown and take a key with you when you go outside.

Search for key lock box and you'll find what you're looking for. You might also try a local locksmith, as it's something they usually carry.

First thing in the morning, before she has had her coffee...she won't remember to grab the key.
I have been trying to lock only the deadbolt since then.
But another issue...I took my stock key in to get a couple of copies made, and the key split in two while the locksmith was trying to copy it, so the stock keys are made out of junk. So, if we happen to break a key, we are still locked out, so I would really like to have a spare outside somewhere secure.
Mel S...That looks perfect, and will probably fit in the rear bumper!

Lucky guy
My DW hasn't let me take her nightgown for a lot of years, (35+).
Let alone take it outside.

Well if you took her nightgown she would not be going outside.

Never thought about a combo key box great idea Mel. I will be getting one before the spring travels. I would think the best spot for me would be mounted somewhere in the propane compartment as the door doesn't have a lock or under the hood as I can open the hood from the outside and there is plenty of flat metal to mount it. Both areas are out of sight and have limited exposure to the elements. I guess the location would depend on what kind of RV you had so it could be different for everyone.

After having to call a locksmith to drill out the lock in a rest area, I bought a plastic key case with a magnet on the back. Placed it on the steel shelf on the propane tank. Not obvious, easy to get to, and inexpensive.

I keep two keys, one for the deadbolt and one for the door lock taped to the top of the propane compartment with Gorilla tape. No lock on it so I know I can get to it.
It is difficult to see but readily accessible if I need it.
Cost? .01 cents or less.

I attached a set to the supports for the propane tank since it was the only outside compartment that didn't lock. Need to do the same with our present rig although it does have the electronic key pad too. Still could come in handy though.
