Had the 8.1 in the '04 37 ft Tiffin that I just traded. Got 8.5 to 9.5 on a good trip. Bucked high winds on the last trip before trading and we ranged between 5.9 to no more than 6.2 betwen east Texas and Las Vegas driving 55 to 60 mph. Head winds were so bad, some of the DP were pulling off and driving on the shoulder to let faster traffic through..

I also get around 7-9 depending on if using the genny for the roof air.
I also had a V10 before......what a dog......
Horray for horse power, but it comes at a price at the pump. (love the Allison too)

I can throw in my 2 cents on this one, for what it's worth. We just returned from a 2424 mile trip, from Reno, NV to Sturgis, SD and back. I don't recall how many gallons of gas we went through, but I remember our trip average was 7.48 mpg. We towed 2 Ultra Classic Harley's going and 1 returning. Ultra, weighs in at about 850, trailer is around 350 or so. Fresh water tank was around 20 gallons (160 lbs) gray and black were empty at beginning of day, a little heavier at end of day, but fresh was lighter by an equal amount. Motorhome is a 2005 National Dolphin, 34 footer, with the 8.1 vortec and W22 chassis, with the Allison 5 speed. Or 4 speed with overdrive and some would refer to it. On the dash computer with it set to show "avg mpg" we saw averages as high as 11 mpg, and lows of around 5 mpg. I don't know what the computers average is based on.

It's a rolling average, based on the last 50 miles travelled. In hilly terrain you'll see it drop when you're climbing and raise up when you're descending, but if you're on pretty level terrain for at least 50 miles you'll get a decent number...
