Our Moab Utah Trip that didn't happen

We left south Texas on Monday (09-29) headed to Carlsbad Caverns and then to Moab and then the Grand Canyon.
Took 2 nice leisurely days to Carlsbad about 8 miles from the Caverns had a blowout on the tow dolley. Not much of a shoulder to get off on, barely off the road. I have a spare tire I carry for the dolley but of course didn't put the tire tool with it Changed it with a 3/8" drive short ratchet, not much fun.

Go buy two new tires at Walmart at 4:30pm, they are closing the doors as I get there, but they were really nice and got the tires.

We piddled around the next day after the caverns and then got a late start the next day. My best friend Gizmo (our malti-poo) wasn't feeling real well so we waited a while before leaving. He seemed to be feeling much better. Drove really late for us and got to the casino in Cuba NM. They have water and electric hookups for RV's. It was cold this morning 33* and Gizmo was much worse so we decided to go back to Albuquerque to find a vet spent several hours there (and lots of $).

Decided to head back toward home in case Gizmo needs to go to his vet at home (he really is a sick puppy- 8years old) This is the worse than we have ever seen him.

So we are in Elephant Butte NM tonight and will head out toward home again in the morning. We are at Cedar Grove RV Park and it is a really nice park. No cable but get good locals and the wifi is the best I have had in any park. Just gravel with concrete pad but all is very well kept and clean.

Will have to plan another trip to Moab.

I don't know why you chose to delay getting a diagnosis from an emergency vet for Gizmo. You would not delay medical assistance for your spouse would you, or would you? Pain is pain, and allowing suffering needlessly is not humane.

Doggy Daddy I'm sorry if you think we didn't get Gizmo to the vet asap, but we did---but thank you for your concern.

JoCat54, sorry to hear your trip was cut short and your dog got sick. You really didn't deserve that jab from Doggy Daddy, I know I've always tried to wait a little while with pets as they sometimes get sick just like humans and are fine in a day or two. I don't know about you but My Wife and I don't run to the Doctor or the emergency room everytime we feel a little sick. You took him to a Vet in Albuquerque, and then canceled your vacation and headed home to your regular Vet. I don't know what else he expected you to do, and his comment was out of line, and wasn't in the spirit of what IRV2 ia all about. Good Luck and I hope Gizmo has a speedy recovery.

JoCat,
I echo the above sentiments from Mike and Cha. My dog is as spoiled as any and gets all (or more) attention from our Vet that he should, but I would also have given it a day to see if Gizmo was really sick or just feeling bad that day. You know the dog and his character, so you are the one to decide if he is suffering or just feeling poorly, and then you can act accordingly.
We cut a trip short recently and when we got home on a weekend our Vet wasn't open so we had to take our dog to the only 24hour emergency pet clinic in our area, which was an hour away. The doc found nothing wrong and the dog was acting /feeling normal when we got there. But that's just what one does when one has furry kids.

Agree with the above. Sounds like you did what most of us do with our furry kids. While we were on a recent 3 month trip, one of our pups started getting listless and did not really eat much at all for 3 days. However, she still seemed to want to play a bit and was willing to take long walks, but certainly not her normal self. DW and I considered taking her to a vet on day 2 but decided to wait one more day. After seeing no real improvement on day 3, we made decision to see a vet first thing next day. However, morning of day 4, she ate like a hungry wolf and was fine from that point on.

As already said, sometimes like us, our dogs have an off day or two. We think we was just travel weary.... we had been on the road for a week and had finally stopped at one place for a week.

Our best wishes for the full recovery of you pup.

Sorry you missed getting to Moab. We are headed there next week for a Jeep rally. Hope the pup gets better. You will just have to put Moab on the list for next year.

Just an update---Gizmo is much better, still not his normal self but almost. Thanks to all for the support.
Made it home around 3:30 this afternoon after having more tow dolly problems (unloaded the car and drove it the last 60 or so miles. Looks like the tow dolly has some cracked welds on the tilt part. Not sure how that would happen but will be tearing it apart to investigate and repairing the welds.

That's Great News! So good to hear Gizmo is better. "Makes My Tail Wag".
It can be such a worry when they are ill and most times it's just a down day or so.
At least I believe we all hope so deeply that is all it is.
Moab has been on my list to do since I was 19, hoping next year or two.
Freddie, Lady & Prince say Woof, Woof To Gizmo. .

Doggy daddy, how do you come to the conclusion the dog was in pain? They went to a vet. That comment was completely unwarranted and ridiculous.

It's good to read that Gizmo is getting up and about, that being said lets not lose focus of the original post.
