outside door handle doesn't work

so I'm here in Washington DC having a nice vacation and I go outside close the door and when I try to go back inside the door handle won't open the door. The outside latch has become separated from the door operating mechanism. Well thank goodness there was someone inside.
After removing the door panel found the latch was missing a small pin with splines that attaches the outside door lever to the operating mechanism. After a bit I did get it installed.
Learned something really important to share====>had yopu considered this yourself? I had not.
Be prepared for the door doesn't open. do you have an emergency plan? Mine was to make sure at least one outside window was able to be opened to get access.
and then go back and make sure the pin stays installed.
