Over the river and through the woods

Some may find this article: http://www.tampabay.com/news/transportation/roads/article1052950.ece about map sources interesting. Toward the end it talks about the digital age divide where those raised in the digital age wouldn't think of looking at a paper map. We've experienced too many instances where common sense has to override what the talking box on the dash is telling us to do. We use both in our travels and can't imagine not having a hardcopy map at hand when RVing. Maybe when electronic routing gets more reliable, but not yet.

Amen. Have been sent through neighborhoods and down dirt roads on some of the Garmin routes.

Our local news recently carried a story about how many younger people today cannot tell time. They've never had to; every clock they've ever seen is/was digital.

We named our GPS Hannah, a palindrome, because we never know if she is coming or going.

While I agree with you and we don't leave home without paper maps, we've also noticed that the quality and detail of the paper maps continues to get worse. We can purchase nothing on paper with the kind of detailed information that Street Altas (our GPS program) has. That said, Street Atlas is wrong a lot of time, even with roads that have been there for more than 5 years.

I have also used maps.goggle and their satellite view to look down into an area near the destination we are headed to. This can sometimes, change my mind on the route I will take.

I'll bet they can't do long division either! (Come to think of it, I'm not sure even if I can anymore.)

I find it interesting that there are "youngins" out there that can calculate a trajectory to the moon and back but can't figure how many square feet of carpeting they need to buy for their living room.

It drove my 1st wife nuts that I would keep a world atlas and calculator on my table next to my chair. But if I heard of a place on the news or other show I had never heard of before. I would want to look it up. Or if I was thinking of a project I would want to figure the amount of lumber or concrete I would need. Maybe I'm just weird.

A 2nd Lieutenant that I had in the army in '63 couldn't even read a map. I don't think a guide dog could have helped him.

I carry heavily detailed road atlases for various states in the big tool box behind the seat of my truck. The GPS is used more for position check than anything else, to see where on the road I am currently.

If I want to navigate somewhere, I use a map, unless I'm in Seattle, then I'll take all the help I can get .

Hmmmm, that seems to be the same condition my wife is afflicted with, wonder if there is a cure?

We probably best leave the DWs out of this one. I don't know that I can take any more beatings. However, I do have an ex-sister-in-law who believes that whichever way the car is traveling is North. Try following some directions from her.

Google still doesn't show our road or houses on the road. And we've been here since 2005.

Went to the store the other day and bought a small item, gave the cleark a bill, then waited for the change. the computer was down and the poor girl didn't know how to make change. I told her how much she owed me and she wasn't sure if she should give it to me or not.

Went through school and still could not do math. O ME O MY
