I needed to check fuel prices to decide to fill up tomorrow in Nebraska or Colorado and visited Flying J's fuel price web page.

A note at the top of the page caught my eye:

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content">To better serve professional drivers, Flying J is rapidly updating diesel fuel pumps to accommodate transactions that exceed $980. Click here to view the locations that have been updated. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

How about a fuel bill of a thousand dollars?

On some of the trucks, that's only a half tank.

I drove a truck for 3 months . . . I thought that would be the way to see the country and get paid (it wasn't!!). I cannot imagine being an owner/operator right now with the way gas prices are . . . . I remember when it cost as much to fill up a semi as it does to fill up my RV now!!

I do feel sorry for the owner-operators but then again virtually all of these guys are *still* running the speed limit plus about five over. If I was trying to make a living on the road, I think I would slow down. Even if you improve your MPG by a fraction, that will add $up$ over the weeks and months.

We are now running 60 on Interstates and *everybody* passes us. Some company OTR trucks will creep by us, but that is fairly unusual.

A tip of the hat to you for trying a non-traditional profession

Gotta remember, OTR's can only run a limited # of hours a day now (New regulations), and are only making money when those wheels are turning.

I just recently moved from PA to TX. I drove a 24' moving truck towing a Durango on a trailer 1,600 miles. The truck was limited at 70 mph. I can tell you I was amazed that the majority of the trucks on the road were doing the speed limit. I have done a lot of traveling on the highways in my lifetime, and can say that truckers have definately slowed down in the face of high fuel prices. My hat off to them for doing their part to conserve fuel.

Of course we're doing 60 and if a truck does 70, that is fast to us relatively speaking. If you are running 70, the OTR relative speed is about the same +-. I just thought these guys would be doing 60-65 and not 70-75. Their operating costs will ultimately impact the price we pay for anything shipped by truck (or rail/marine for that matter.)

PS: Welcome to Texas

Whaler </div></BLOCKQUOTE>Thanks! I usually use the Flying J fuel prices as a relative benchmark, but I'll give that site a look.
