Pain meds on the road

With the opioid epidemic it is hard to get pain meds even at home. It's nearly impossible to get them filled on the road. It sucks having to plan trips around medication refills! And pretty much limits trips to under 30 days. Just complaining I guess. Anyone else have to schedule travel around medication?

As long as you are in CA your Dr can send a Rx electronically to any pharmacy. Out of CA is a problem. Your Dr might be willing to give you a Rx for 6 weeks or so if you explain why it is needed. Beyond that you are pretty much out of luck as far as I know.

Last summer I switched from Fentanyl patches to generic Butrans patches. Fentanyl is schedule 2 and requires a monthly Dr visit and a hard copy Rx. Butrans is schedule 3. Your doctor can call it into the pharmacy and you can buy a 12 week supply.

My doctor prescribes the 20 mcg patch knowing that I am cutting them in half. I apply clear Tegaderm over it to keep it dry. I found a deal on the 20 mcg patches thru Good Rx Gold. Four patches (1/week) cost $163 plus $6 monthly for Good Rx Gold membership. My insurance won’t cover them. The Fentanyl patches were only $32/30 days.

To transition from Fentanyl to Butrans I had to use Hydrocodone for about a week until the Fentanyl was out of my system. The only thing I don’t like about the Butrans is that antihistamines will negate them. No more benedryl to help me sleep.

If you need help sleeping get a proper sleep aid. While benedryl does help, that's not it's primary function and as you note, it has side effects with other medications.

I don't take any "high speed" pain meds but do take tramadol for collateral damage from back surgeries. I'm retired military and use the mail order pharmacy for regular meds. On the trip to AK I had my physician write a special script for extra due to the trip, called the pharmacy well ahead to get an extra supply. Wasn't easy as they difficult butI did eventually get it. I save meds so I don't run out.

I use VA and DW uses Maxor. In my case I get a "maintenance" supply. I go to the VA pharmacy with my list of medications, how much I have on hand and how much I will need to maintain me until I return, usually 4 months or so. DW just calls in and they mail them to where ever she states. We have been doing that for over 10 years.

Are you sure of that, May 1st I had an appendectomy and was prescribed hydrocodone. The Dr prescribed two other scripts electronically, but the hydrocodone had to be hand carried to the pharmacy. That was in Paso Robles, CA.

Pain meds on the road

I think some donít understand that hard core highly addictive opioid drugs are not in the same league as your , say, blood pressure etc meds. Unfortunately many because of severe pain must use these highly addictive drugs that by law require a physician to see the patient personally every month and prescribe no more than 30 days supply.
If you are in that severe medical condition ( and it is serious) unfortunately it will limit your ability. The misuse of opioid drugs and sale of excess prescriptions to addicts has unfortunately caused this.
Like other life changing illnesses being in that position will sadly end many long term travel plans.

I'm headed to the VA tomorrow for a maintenance refill. I'll ask. I don't take them, even when in pain.

Unfortunately I need opioids to walk. 21 surgeries since 2004 and more to come. All injuries were received from 3 drivers running a red light on 3 different occasions. Just a fact of life now. I need them to function. I NEVER abuse them and have NEVER taken 2 at a time. I could lay in bed complaining. But I'm glad to have survived and want to enjoy life. Unfortunately 3 week trips will have to do. It sucks not being able to full time too. But I want to be thankful and enjoy what life has to offer. Was hoping for an alternative to be able to pick up meds on the road but will have to enjoy what I get. Thanks to all for input!

Maybe not every Dr can order opioids electronically?, mine can. Have to be seen personally by my Dr every 90 days, not 30.
