I just completed the application for the PenFed Platinum Cash Awards credit card. I found out that they have TWO cards that give the 5 percent cash rebate on gas. One they call the Platinum Signature card gives the 5 percent on fuel and 1 percent on everything else, BUT the 5 percent on fuel expires in October! The other one give 5 percent on fuel with no expiration but only .25 percent on everything else. That's the one I chose.

I also asked the lady about whether I would get the 5 percent at the diesel pumps at a truck stop. She said as long as they will let you pay with the card AT THE PUMP then I should get the discount. We'll soon find out!

I use a lot of fuel, mostly diesel. While I get gas pretty much anywhere, I purchase almost all of my diesel at Flying J. In order to receive the discount the purchase must be made at the pump. If you go inside and pay at the counter you get no discount.
Flying J, either at the RV island or in the truck lanes, is well set up for in and out with no limit. My purchases are usually between $250 and $300 and I do those with one swipe of the card.
My savings are generally about $400 a year. Since I am going to buy my fuel with a credit card anyway, for me its a no brainer.

Ken, are you saying that you use the PenFed card or the Flying J card? It's great to know that you only have to swipe the card once!

Joe, if you get the free Flying J RV card (not sure what it is called, but not the Good Sam/Flying J credit card) you can use the PenFed card along with the RV card and it will let you fill up (I think up to $450) on one swipe. If I remember correctly, at the RV Island and maybe at the Truck islands now, you swipe your PenFed card then it asks for loyalty card, once you swipe both you are good to go.

Thanks Mike! I'll check that out!

I'm just finishing an around the US trip and have put about 10K miles on this RV on this trip. I have used my PenFed card at Flying J's along with the Flying J Real Value Member Card. Sometimes the pump will allow me to fill up - usually $200 to $250 without having to run the card again. Sometimes it will shut off at $75 or $100. So I don't think the card shut off program is the same at all the Flying J stations. I do tend to use the RV pumps since fill nozzle at the truck side is to large to easily get into the fill pipe.

I use the PenFed card wherever I get fuel, always at the pump to get the discount. When at a Flying J I also use their RV customer card(loyalty card) which gives an additional .03 off per gallon, helps offset the .06 they charge for using a credit card. You get the PenFed discount(shows up automatically on your bill) whether or not you enter a loyalty card.
PenFed is a credit union you have to join and open an account for a minimum of $15. Not a fee, as the money is in your account and you get a statement every month independent of your card bill. No monthly account or other fee, no annual charge for the credit card either. If you ever close the account you get the $15 returned.
For me it all works.

Ken

Must have increased it in the last couple of years. I had to have only $5 in my account when I joined.

When I'm flashed, "SEE THE CASHIER", I drive on the another station. The PenFed 5% is only for 'pay-at-the-pump' purchases only anyway.

When I joined PedFed a couple of years ago it was $5.00 but for some reason I put $100 in. Don't have a good reason for that but that's what I did.

I'm sure Bob, it's just because your such a great guy.

All kidding aside I like the PenFed card for my fuel purchases. You just have to make sure to 'Pay At the Pump'. That's the only way the 5% applies.
I might also mention that I use it for fuel purchases only. I have used it for a regular purchase that wasn't fulfilled by a vender. When I went to put the charge into contest, PenFed wasn't at all cooperative the way Discover Card is.
Different cards have different advantages.

I got a letter from PenFed about a month ago that the Rewards Card would start charging a $25 per year fee and the gas discount would go down to 3%. So, I called them yesterday to check on alternative cards (only 1 w/5% and that ends in Dec). The lady told me I could open a Money Market Savings Account with $25 and that would exempt me from the annual fee and the discount % reduction. Took about 5 minutes, funded with my CC.
