Does anyone know, is it legal to carry or possess either long guns or a hand gun in your RV, State to state, I know Canada is a problem for the hand guns.

There is a book published:
Travelers Guide to the Firearm Laws of the Fifty States. That is extremely helpful when traveling with a firearm. Each state has different laws. Some must be in view others have to be seperated from the ammo and both have to be in the trunk. So you can see the laws vary wildly.

I second the book mentioned in the post by Jo/Lee. I have an old copy that, although is outdated, is still a pretty good reference source.

That said however, I believe shotguns are good to go in all of the states.

2007 Guide to Firearm Law of the 50 States

2007 Traveler's Guide To The Firearm Laws of the 50 States

RVers who travel with a firearm may not know that what's legal in their home state may be a felony in another. This guide explains the specific gun laws of every state.

You might consider a concealed weapons permit. We live in Florida and my wife has a permit and it is good in 29 states including Michigan. Florida has reciprocity agreements with these states making the permit good in each of them.

My gun permit is the 2nd Amendment to the United States Constitution... I'll take my chances with 12 rather than 6....

Canada is also a problem for more than just hand guns. Any firearm going to Canada is up for something at the border. If you are going hunting you need proof.

I think you asked about carrying a firearm in your RV. A lot of the responses you got had to deal with carrying a firearm in a vehicle. They are two different things.

Carrying a firearm in a vehicle does very from state to state. You need to check the rules on carrying one in your RV. Your RV is considered your home and the rules are pretty much the same as for having one in your stick house. Now, if you get stopped in your motor home and you have a gun laying on the dash, you might have some issues.

I'm quite sure that your RV is considered a motor vehicle when traveling or parked in a rest area, shopping center, etc.

When set up in a campground, your RV should be considered your home, BUT, each state, county, parish, township, city, town, etc, may feel differently. Generally, there are less legal ramifications when set up as opposed to traveling.

Unfortunately, each jurisdiction, has their own laws and their own interpretation of those laws.

Generally, long guns have less restrictions than hand guns, with the exception of high capacity magazines, and "assault weapons", which are banned in some states and some cities.

Out of sight, out of mind is a good thing here.

Route 66 has a good reply. I'll add that handguns into Canada is a big NO. You need to talk to them about long guns and definately declare at the border. DOnt ever try and hide weapons crossing an international border! Dont even think of carrying even AMMO into Mexico. I live 70 miles from Mexico and will never set foot across that border.
