Pex fittings

I'm new to pex fittings so if the od is 1" do you order 1" pex fittings. My water hose is one inch od.

I am asking because I ordered 1" and when they came in they measured 1 1/4" wide although the bag said 1"

Yes, pipe, metal, plastic etc is measured by ID.
For instance a 1/2" PEX fitting will have a pipe OD of 5/8" for standard PEX tubing.
But, if you are using flexible braided hose, the ID will be closer to 3/4" but still 1/2" ID.
The higher the pressure rating, the greater the wall thickness but the ID remains the same.

It's a Plumber Thang......

Pipe size is almost always ID, you would have to specifically look for OD sizes

Pipe is measured Inside Diameter.

Tubing is measured Outside Diameter.

Oh, you mean pipe is measured by ID and tubing is measured by OD? I think I got it.

That's partially true....The rest of the story

1/2" Pipe is actually larger that 0.5"
It's a historical thing... way back 1/2" pipe really was 1/2" ID and OD was same as today. With improving materials the same strength / pressure rating could be obtained w thinner walls, however, all the threading tubing would be useless if the ODcwas changed so the kept OD thecssme and decreased the wall thk... increasing the ID to more than 1/2"
Same idea with other pipe sizes...

Are you trying to repair a water hose with PEX? It won't work because they are different standards.

You need to measure the id of the hose first. and then convert to a near PEX size by using a Hose Barb/FIPS fitting and a PEX/MIPS fitting. But first where is this hose coming from? Is it your fresh water tank? Is it the city water flange? The pump? If any of those, the correct way would be to get the correct pex fitting that threads to them and run your pex from there.

Just a note here - for the, IMHO - easiest fittings to do the job - just get Shark Bites or equivalent - they work and take the guessing out of the equation.

I carry a few couplings - 90's - and a T just for an emergency - they are life savers.

Here - https://www.amazon.com/slp/sharkbite...56vs8x4p6kd33o - or Home Depot

In most motorhomes/RV's the fittings are 1/2".

Hope this helps,
