Problems With Aqua Kem Toss Ins

Earlier this year I bought several packages of Thetford Aqua-kem Toss Ins. We've used them in the past and they seemed to do a good job. This time however there seems to ba a problem with the supposedly dissolvable packets.

Our first instance was in May of this year. We were going to spend a weekend camping at a state park so I dropped a couple packets in the black tank on Friday before heading out. We drove 175 miles to the park and set up camp for the weekend. Rather than stop at the dump station on the way out Sunday we decided to empty the tanks at home.

When we got home I hooked up the mascerator pump and opened the black tank valve. Much to my surprise the first things out of the tank into the clear hose were the 2 packets of chemicals totally intact. Neither of them had dissolved.

Since then I've opened the packets by hand and tossed them in the toilet to avoid a repeat of the situation. Last Monday we finished the last 400 miles of a 2 month long trip so once again I hooked up the pump and started emptying the tanks. When the process was nearly complete the pump started to labor but managed to finish the job. After cleaning everything up I took off the pump inlet fitting to find the remnants of one of the Toss In bags wrapped around the impeller. I mamaged to pull it out with a pair of pliers, but it was still as tough as when I threw it in the tank.

Has anyone else had a similar experience or did I just get a bad batch?

I never used them, just lots of water. Sound like you may have thrown them in the wrong round can. lol

The key might be "earlier this year". I used to use Aqua Kem packets and I found they had a limited shelf life. After a few months I had some of them go rock hard. I threw them out so I don't know if they would still dissolve or not.

Like rgvtexan, I don't use chemical packs. Plenty of water on every flush, don't dump until the black tank is almost full and backwash thoroughly. Every couple of months I dump 5 gallons of clean water, a big bag of ice and a cup of Dawn dish soap down the toilet right before I go for a long drive. Never had a clog or a trace of odor.

I don't use them. I know they made them to be user friendly etc but unscrewing a cap isn't all that time consuming.

Agree. All the additives for the black tank are money makers for the manufacturer. If your tank is properly installed and vented there will be no odor. Use lots of water, that's key.

Just to add it can be done without lots of water. I've Camped for years in the So Cal deserts with no hookups and using the bare minimum of black tank treatments. I always have enough on hand and use if needed.

That is the thinking of all full-timers I ever met, mine too.
