And I sure wish there were more places that actually did.

My oldest son, a heroin addict currently serving time, would steal my wifes credit cards out of her purse, buy things with it, the pawn them for pennys on the dollar and buy drugs with money.

Kinda makes me wonder why "we" are giving him a second (or 3rd, or maybe 5th) chance when he gets out...

Oh yeah I remember, that's why I bought the knight... [Moderator Edit] I am "down the road"… alone.

Don't forget identity theft begins at home.

With me it was a brother who did it to my parents...

How did Neil Young put it... "I've seen the needle and the damage done."

Speaking of SSN's-
I think we all know that we shouldn't carry the cards on us, but...
Check your Health Insurance ID cards-
Some employers use the employee's SSN as their member number!
Easy way for it to fall into the wrong hands

I got used to carrying my ss card around, because I used to go to the casino near my hometown in Michigan a lot. Don't need it for the smaller wins, but if you win big, you have to do all that paperwork and requirements.

I also have the added benefit (if you want to call it that) of trying to repair my credit from being unemployed, and then needing surgery, so no one could use my identity if they wanted to.

I just want to add that in Canada it is AGAINST THE LAW even for a bank to ask you for your social insurance number. If the Canada Revenue Agency needs to know my SS number for the bank to open an account then they the CRA can contact me for verification.

I had a provincial telephone company ask me for my SS number when I was getting a cell phone from them so I asked if I could use the phone to call the local RCMP office and you'd be surprised at how quick that "required" piece of ID suddenly became not required.

If you find out a credit reporting agency has somehow acquired you SS number you can force them to remove it from their system. It is a lengthy process but it can be done especially if you are willing to make media noise about them having something of yours that they legally cannot possess.

Possum,

Doesn't work that way in the USA. The social security number is the prime ingredient in obtaining your credit rating from one of about 3 credit reporting agencys that most all businesses seem to use. Very difficult if not impossible to obtain financing for an automobile, RV or home purchase without giving your SS number to the lender so they can check your credit before making a sizeable loan to you. Just the way it is. Almost impossible to get a credit card without producing your SS number. Our government urges us to keep the number confidential, yet they are one of the biggest offenders, of requiring it for identification. Just this past month, I applied for a passport, guess what, the feds wanted my SS number. Open a checking account at any bank, SS number is required. Don't know if the military still does it, but they did use your SS number as your military ID number. On and on------near impossible to keep it confidential.

Me, too. I just write "SEE ID" in magic marker in the signature space. That way, if someone steals the card, they don't have your signature...and believe me, that signature makes a difference. Had my wallet stolen by a clerk at a Motel 6 while I was checking in, and only one card in it got used for anything, and that was just a couple of gasoline purchases.

I've been to Disney World, and they accepted my credit cards with that notation on the back. What they're doing today may be a different story. I once had some store refuse to accept my unsigned card, and I walked out, leaving their merchandise on the counter.

Just in passing, the most likely place for your credit card information to be stolen is at a restaurant, since that is one of the few times it's out of your sight. Next likeliest is in the mail.

Here's the bad news. Most states' driver's licenses are tied to a SSN, even if it's not on the license, which it is not, usually. This is especially true if you have anything other than a standard operator's license, such as a CDL, which all states are required to tie to a SSN.

I think we can safely say that our SSN is now our national ID #.
