Coming from the boating world I have never had a power problem except for electrolysis. But I have been reading all I can on surge problems and I feel it is time. Is this the best brand ? It sounds like it is.

It's a matter of opinion. There are other brands out there. IMO though, PI is the best. They provide higher joules rating & protection for more different types of electrical failures than other brands do.

It is the best brand IMO. I finally purchased one last week after being " lucky "for 10 years. The lifetime warr. is obviously unbeatable. I feel safer already.

PI replaced a friends 4 year old EMS that was defective last year so I guess they've always had a lifetime warranty.

I happened to meet the owner of PI at the Fleetwood rally in Gillette, WY a few years ago and he's hell bent on providing such good customer service a person would be embarrassed to use another mfg EMS. What a concept!

If I remember correctly the model with the remote voltage monitor is the only model where the circuit board can be removed and sent for repair. The other models the whole unit has to be returned.

Wrong. All four of the hardwired units, both remote display and non-remote display, are modular units that have circuit boards that can be swapped out.

When the unit fails, PI will walk you through the diagnostic procedures over the phone, then send out a new board (or a complete unit if necessary). They will assist you over the phone with removing and replacing the bad board once you receive it. It is not necessary for you to send in the board and wait for them to receive it, repair it, then reship it (it's not likely they would repair a board anyway; the cost of diagnostic time and repair labor would be too high, not to mention a likely higher future return rate). They may or may not want you to return the bad board.

Only the portable ones are not user repairable and would have to be returned to the factory.

I suggest you go to PI's website and read the product description on all four of their hard wired models.

I have a Surge Guard on my coach. Have had zip problems with it and know that it has save me some problems on more than one occasion. I bought it because it is the brand that is sold by the RV service center that I use the most. I was still a novice at this motorhoming thing and knew nothing about them. Surge Guard now has one with a remote display. Which is better, Surge Guard or Progressive Industries, I have no idea. I think you're in good hands either way.

Which is better, Progressive or Surge Guard? Hopefully, your question was a rhetorical one. The question is highly religious and should be considered for banishment on iRV2. Like you, I have had my Surge Guard since 05 and there have been no problems with it. I know it has save me quite a few times because the power was cut to the coach. However, after the timeout, the power comes back on. I like the brand so much I added the Surge Guard Power Transformer in front of the Surge Guard high/low protection.

As to all the lights and displays the newer models offer, for me, no thanks. I don't need any additional digital displays staring me in the face.

Both companies are good to work with and both make high quality products.

Question, I was going to get the mounted surge protector. I feel they would be hard to steel. Is that the better way to go.

I've had the portable model for 4 years. We are on the road for about 6 months out of the year, and have had no problem with thievery. Of course, there is a first time for everything. The one down side to the portabe model is that if it is raining hard, it's a good idea to protect the SP/Power Cord connection from getting wet. A piece of plastic and some tape does the job.
