Purchasing 2007 Monaco Camelot

We live in Las Vegas and have made our decision to purchase a 2007 Monaco Camelot from a couple living in Arizona. In Nevada, we do not have to pay Sales Tax on private sales so I thought this would be an easy transaction.

I was informed yesterday that the motorhome title is actually held in a Montana LLC owned by the couple in Arizona. My question is, would this still qualify as a Private Sale since I am actually buying from an individual, no matter how it is actually titled/registered? I called the Nevada DMV and the first time after listening to the recorded message it basically ended with we are too busy to take your call right now and hung up.

I called another DMV number, had to wait 20 minutes for a person and it was obvious they did not know the answer but they indicated it would qualify as tax exempt transaction but said I should bring in the paperwork once I got it all and the registration folks could tell me if it qualified for sure or not.

I am starting to consider leaving it in the Montana LLC and taking title that way and keeping it registered in Montana. I just don't want to get stuck paying $12,000 or more in sales tax that I don't have to and it is close to a deal breaker if it doesn't qualify as a private sale. Anyone have any experience in this realm, that might have a suggestion or thought.

Thanks
Bob

Here's Nevada DMV licensing and tax info: Nevada Vehicle Registration Fees

The last line:
Private Party Sales, Family Sales and Gifts - These are not subject to sales taxes.

EDIT: Re-read this...you're concerned because it's actually owned by a corporation - a limited liability corporation. What is the name of that corporation? Is it the sellers name as a LLC, or something else?

IMO it is still a private party sale because it's not a 'dealer sale'. But it might be worth a call to a tax attorney in NV.

Chris

Thanks for the reply and you are absolutely correct, I went down to the Nevada DMV yesterday and talked to 2 individuals and was assured that as long as the llc was not associated with any kind of automotive sales dealership that there would be no sales tax (still almost $1,800 for license plates annually, ouch).

We have decided to make the purchase and next Tuesday we will hook up with the current owners of the Camelot and swap our little pile of cash for their keys. We are really getting pretty excited about the trip to Pheonix and the drive back to Vegas in the new (to us) motorhome.

Good deal. That is a pile of extra cash and no point unless they bleed it out of 'ya, right?

That is also, IMO, a great coach. My fav since that vintage has always been the 36 knight with the big block motor. Seems to me the Camelot is too.

It's gonna be hot, so you'll have a chance to test everything for cooling.

EDIT: For cheap plates it seems to me you gotta register in SD or Oregon. Either of which is pretty easy to do, especially with a motorhome. I think that's what I would do for anything over a couple'a hundred grand. Right before Arnie came along a stopped our excessive reg fees, my little 31' gasser was almost $700. I could'a cried. LOL It's down to about $400 now. Whew!
