It stands for nothing that I know of. Some people spell it "towed" but it's all the same. My little Yaris looks a little like a toad...

But doesn't TOAD also apply to a vehicle on a dolly or trailer?

About ten years ago I had a Ford Aspire. It was frog green and not much bigger than a frog, So naturally it's name was "Frog".

It all started sitting around the campfire one evening when Old Ralph had a stuffed up nose. He meant to say, "Towed" but because of his stopped up nose, he said, "Toad" and because old Ralph was such a good old guy, and everyone liked him really, really well, the figured that Old Ralph just had to be right and they have called it "Toad" ever since.

And that's the way it was.
