R V Insurance

Any recommendations for RV insurance for FULL TIMING it? We have been told by AAA they will not insure, if you live in the RV and do not have stationary, permanent residence. We have retired and are going the road after selling our home in CA, to find a place to retire.

I used Explorer RV Insurance Agency out of Ohio when I was full timing. Their website is Recreational vehicle insurance custom-designed by Explorer RV.

Call Miller Insurance (800-622-6347). Ask for Cheryl. They are an agency who specializes in RVs and knows the requirements of full timers well.

This is not a recommendation as we aren't fulltimers, and I don't have claim experience with them, but Hartford through AARP offers fulltimer insurance.

Thanks for the replies. We are AARP members, never thought of them, will call in the morning. Found out if we close escrow before we buy the motorhome we can't get financing. One thing after another.

Welcome the the forum and congrats on your upcoming adventures.

We did the same thing you're about to do... sold our NorCal home in 2009 and hit the road full time. Love it.

We became members of Escapees and official Texas residents. We utilized an agent who is now located right on the Escapee site in Livingston, Tx. She sold us a Progressive full timers policy. I'm not sure I would recommend them at this point. Nothing awful but our rates have gone up each year. No claim experience.

Best of luck.

Rick

insurance purchase

Just before buying our motorhome last August I did some research and ended up choosing Good Sam's recomendation of GMAC. I was very pleased with rates until I got my new premium notice this week. My insurance had doubled. I assume due to incident of $10K damage in February. Incident was me hitting an obstacle not even on highway. Dumb situation but it happened and I was a 0 point driver for many years. The two fold increase came with a 0 to 5 point rating. I agree $10K damage is a lot, but in the motorhome world, not much. At least that is what my body repair man suggested. I am now back to searching for better rates and I also plan to call GMAC and ask why the huge point increase. SAFECO and/or Republic will be checked next. I have car and truck with SAFECO. Of course, all companies will know of 5 point rating but perhaps others will not punish as heavy. I know wonder if nice premium first year was just bait. Good luck.

Collision or Comprehensive?

I have an insurance question.

I pulled the rig under a tree and the tree branches struck the roof. The damage was minimal, but if I submitted a claim to the insurance company would the damage be covered under collision or comprehensive?

500 collision 250 comp.

Haven't had insurance for a long time, thus forgot about insurance definitions

Thank you.

When you say the tree branches struck the roof.... do you mean that you were parked and the wind blew down some branches or did you hit the branches while parking the rig?

If it was moving, my guess is that it'll be collision.

Agree with Rick, it will be collison.

And if your company goes up a large amount on your premium....shop.

As per my post above, I shopped and saved a bunch after my original mh insurer doubled my premium.

Would you be generous to give the name of your new insurance co? I am shopping

And I hit the branches while driving into a parking spot. I suppose the FSM gets another $500

Explorer RV Insurance Agency

It is their job to find you the best price for the policy that you would like to write.

I'm also a satisfied customer of Miller Insurance Agency in OR. Had GMAC thru them as they were cheaper than GMAC thru Good Sams. Renewal time came and with zero claims rate jumped about 20%.

They shopped several other companies for me, all A rated, and Victoria came in less than GMAC's renewal rate by several 100 even though I increased both personal property coverage and the rig's value.

They do good work.

As a side note, regarding full timer (which we're not) I had to produce proof of coverage for our home to prove we were not full timers.
