Ask yourself if you were to have an explosion because something went wrong would it be worth it? If a leak and someone died because of it would it be worth it?

Not really... there will never be any life threatening danger from removing a tag. Goes way beyond just apples and oranges.

I know the one pound bottles have a safety pressure release. The thing that looks like a valve stem. How did you disable the safety valve?

What do you use the small bottles for?
Propane lanterns: You can get an adapter for the luggable (5-10-20-30) pound tank (Actually I used to lug 100 pounders, that's 179 Pounds of tank) which consists of a fitting to match the tank that goes into the side of a pipe. Multiple "Quick Connects" on the pipe including one on top, a "Claw" like device on the bottom of the pipe engages the "neck" on the propane bottle to keep it upright.
Using it for a Grill or space heater, MULTIPLE options.
THere is an "Extension" hose for use with the Extend-a-Stay or Stay-A-While or .. This same standpipe.. they are usually 10' Hook the grill direct to the luggable tank with a different adapter hose (Tank to Grill)
NOTE: I hook the grill to my motor home's 100 pound mounted tank using an Extend-a-Stay and one of these hoses.. Back in my trailer days I had the Extend-a-Flow (Like the Stay but without the inlet option).

i have read both pages of this topic and i'am still wondering what is the advantage of refilling your own bottles? You need to weigh the gain versus the risk. Being a retired fireman, i bet you know what my answer is? Are you really saving that much Cents? Reminds me of an old saying, "stepping over a dollar to pickup a nickel". So if any of you are thinking about doing this task, why not ask me ahead of time if i've had any experience or witnessed a result of transferring Propane.

This reminds me of my Dad, who would drive past several Dollar stores to get to the 99cent store because of "the obvious savings"!

I don't think that is possible because the supply tank must be inverted.
(However filling from a 20# portable tank does work well).

I have done it several times.
I chill the empty bottle and weigh it on a small digital scale to be sure I do not overfill. I have also been known to run with scissors, play with fire, and knock down hornets nests.
Edit: just like the posted video above, it went up while I was posting.

I see what everyone has said. We went to Wall-Mart today and the 1lb bottles where $3.74. I think for now I will just buy them not refill any. Just need them for the grill and a lantern. I will save the empty one for later if I talk my self into it.

This is why I love reading this forum. Different opinions! Looking back if I had listened to other people I would have never jumped out of a plane.'Airborne' would have never became a pilot, or hiked down to bottom of the Grand Canyon. Loving life!

Not a bad plan. That will give you a chance to look into what is going on during that process. Despite much of the doom and gloom smoke and mirrors generated by some, done properly under the right conditions there's not a lot of danger to it. It's the clueless that get into trouble....
