Here is my personal rule-of-thumb for everywhere -- If school is out or it is a holiday or I'm going to stay a month or more, make reservations. Otherwise, I don't.

Sounds like a good rule to follow. From the responses here, I may have to buy a Wal-Mart guide in addition to a guide to Maine...looks like we may need an alternative 'just in case' campsite on occasion. With the exception of 'staying a month' all the above mets the conditions we'll be traveling in. Except within a day or two, we just won't know where we will be to make reservations...just don't see it happening. Bob

Check out Allstays. Lots of free Walmart parking info including locations that don't allow overnight parking.

One additional consideration. The last time fuel prices were high we found campgrounds in short season areas (Northeast, upper midwest) much more full than other years as people stayed close to home for their vacations and holidays. Even in non resort areas we found that if we wanted to stay longer than a night or two in a specific area reservations were required. We have started reserving spots now for July and August in campgrounds we normally call a week or two ahead of our arrival. A couple of them have told us they expect to be mostly rented to seasonal folks this year and transient sites will be limited.
