Residential Fridge in a 03 HR

I have a 2003 HR Neptune and am interested in installing a Residential Fridge. Has anyone with a similar coach done this and would like to know what model fridge you used that seem to fit. Thanks.

I put a Samsung RF197 (no longer available - replaced by RF18) in a 2005 Allegro Bay several years ago.

What will fit will depend on the features of your particular layout. For example, the Samsung RF197 and RF18 are very tall and likely won't work if you have a furnace or electrical panel under your current fridge. Under our old Norcold, we had a drawer, which I was able to make smaller to accommodate the taller Samsung.

If your fridge is located in a hallway, you will probably want a counter-depth model so it doesn't stick out too far.

Also, you don't necessarily have to put in an 18-cu ft French door fridge like the Samsung. You can go with a 2-door, 12-14 cu ft model that will fit better and that will still give you as much room as a 12 cu ft Norcold.

Lowe's and Home Depot websites have good size info on most of the models they sell. That would be a good place to start looking for something that will fit.

Several RV manufacturers are using various models of Whirlpool refrigerators as original equipment. Someone reported recently that the Fridgidaire warranty will not cover units installed in an RV, so you may want to investigate that further if you end up finding a Fridgidaire model you like.

Another decision you will need to make is if you want to power the fridge from an inverter. Some people who install a RR never boondock and just turn the fridge off while they travel. It will hold temperature fairly well for 4 hours or so if you keep the door closed. If you are driving longer than that, run the genny for a while to keep the fridge cold.

If you have or want to install an inverter for the fridge, the Samsung will run off MSW, but many other makes will require PSW.

I put one in our 2000 Dutch Star. My strong suggestion to you is measure, measure, measure, then measure again. I couldn't believe how many times my measurements would change by as much as a 1/2". I thought I was losing it. But in the end it all worked out. I put in a Whirlpool WRT1111. I already had a Magnum 2800 PSW, solar, and AGM's.

The model that fits depends on the space available, and that is floor plan dependent. Height and depth are critical, of course, but you also need to measure to be sure the door(s) can swing open enough for access and that the inside drawers can be opened, and that a bottom freezer can roll out (French door and bottom freezer models).

Cabinet depth fridges are shallower and may be a better depth for RV use, but they are also wider. French door models have narrower doors, but the bottom freezer needs a lot of room in front to open fully.

You also need to figure out how to get the new fridge into the RV. Even with fridge doors removed it may not fit through the entry door. May have to remove a window or sometimes even the windshield. However, a friend of mine got an 18 cu ft Whirlpool into his 2004 HR Endeavor through the door. Tight, but he managed!

As the man said: Measure, measure, and measure again!
