Reuse Water

Hi I was thinking of capturing the cold water while waiting for the hot water to start and putting it back into the holding tank. Any thoughts on this idea?

During the recent California drought many people would catch that water in 5 gallon buckets to save water. However, we would use that water to flush toilets, water plants, and such. You would have to be careful about what you use the water for. I would not want to contaminate the fresh water system if you are drinking it.

Personally, we camp with hookups so we're never using the fresh tank. I'd do what baha does...keep a bucket in the bathroom and use it for the toilet.

We do that at home and save the water for plants. Friends do it and put the water in the washing machine.

We captured the shower water in a bucket and used it for flushing toilet. I wouldn't put it back into the fresh water tank.

Why not? I keep two 1-gallon jugs on hand to catch shower water, and we use them every single time we take a shower. When they get full, I put the water back into the fresh water tank, and have been doing so for years.

I catch it in a dishpan and use it for dishes or the toilet

I just start my shower with cold water, it gets hot in less than a minute and I usually rinse off with cool water at the end of the shower anyway. Why create so much work saving/reusing water?

Thanks so much for all the replies. The most common use of the water has been for flushing the toilet. :} We use a compostable toilet. I also have a three tier water filtering system.

I designed my own hot water recirculation system so only need to purge the shower hose.
I save that small amount in a small plastic jar and use to flush toilet.
