Roadside Assistance

The inevitable finally happened.

This past Friday, we had a puncture on the right rear outer tire. Our tire pressure monitor told us about it. Good thing too. We slowed down immediately and pulled over at the next exit about a minute after the alarm began. We checked the tire and could hear the air escaping. Another 2 minutes passed and the tire was flat. Without the TPMS, we'd have not known until something catastrophic happened.

Anyway, called Good Sam roadside service. We had a spare tire, but not on a rim, knowing it could be mounted on the roadside. The surprise came when GS charged us $110 to mount the tire! The GS literature said we'd be responsible for mounting costs, but dang!

Seems just a tad excessive to us. Anyone have an idea if this is or isn't a reasonable amount?

Steve

No, about $25 is normal for a dismount/remount on a truck tire.

I would protest to GS. I had a blow-out on I-75, back in July, on the inside, passengerside dual. Called GS, told them I had an unmounted spare. They sent a service truck out within 45 mins. The guy was prepared and took both tires off, changed the damaged tire and didn't charge me anything. I did give him a $20 tip though, because it was hot out there.

GS changed 3 tires for me, had to mount a tire once, never charged me anything.

Like above, I did tip the repair man $20.

Yes that is way out of line, even when done at the roadside.

Note that GS did not charge you - the roadside vendor did. GS doesn't set their rates. However, GS hired the contractor for you and has a contract with them to provide service to GS customers, so has a moral responsibility to see that you are treated fairly. Complain th GS.

You got ripped off, or charged the entire service. Either way let Good Sam know.

An update...

I contacted Good Sam ERS. The fellow on the phone agreed I shouldn't have been charged, but told me I'd have to fill out their standard claim form to apply for a refund. I filled out the form online and a few weeks later, received a phone call informing me my request was approved and a week later received a check covering the entire amount.

So, a happy ending.
