Rock guards

Any value in having a rock guard? I understand many folks have removed because they cause damage to their towed vehicle. Any difference between 4 down and dolly? I don't want to waste the money if they are ineffective.

Thanks!

Use Search. Topic has been discussed many times.
Most that post don't like the guards. Stirs up dust and rocks.
Not sure about the people that don't post.

We didn't have one and no damage in 8 yr. to our Jeep - 4 down. We did have stiff guards behind the wheels.

We have seen folks removing them on our trip to Alaska. They showed us a layer of 1" rocks laying at the base of their toads' windshields. We had just traveled the same area of construction and no damage. Of course, I don't know how fast they were driving!

Hi ! Welcome to IRV2! We're sure glad you joined the gang!

You'll find many different opinions on this subject. We have the UltraGuard solid rubber flap across the back of the MH, and a Protect-a-Tow mesh shield between the MH and toad. We have never had a rock chip on the toad with this arrangement.

Noticed you are kinda new on the forum and wanted to say hello.

Good luck, happy trails, and God bless!

Have one on our Newmar gasser and it hasn't caused any problems at all towing the Malibu. Perhaps it's due to the MH being a gasser with quite a bit of overhang in back of the rear axle. I've considered the Protect A Tow, but just don't see where I'd get enough of a benefit to warrant the extra set up and cost.

There was a recent in depth discussion on the the big flap. Hard to make a cross the board generalization as they are not all the same height from the road. The one on my coach doesn't hang that low it's ridged . I can't comment if it would kick rocks up in Alaska but it didn't drag rolling over the hills , at my camping club to get to more remote dry camping spots. I have seen others barely off the ground, that look like they would drag on grade changes. Those seem to be the hanging ones/ non-ridged .They discussed raising them up some as well as cutting down the size or both.
