Roof material

Hey there gang,
I have a question that Im hoping someone out there can answer for me. I have a 1992 Gulfstream ultra limited 27 ft RV. Im looking to have the entire roofing membrane replaced now, if I take the old rubber roof off what am I going to find a metal roof or luan under the rubber? The reason why Im asking is because I just received a $3500- 4000 quote from a local RV dealer here in Upstate NY to have the roof on my travel trailer replaced. The rep said that the luan underneth would have to be replaced as well since it pulls up as the rubber roof is being taken off.

I think the company rep thinks that I have a travel trailer and not a motorized RV. Exactly what is underneth the rubber roof on my Gulfstream ? Hope to here from someone.- Thanks mike

Mike: Your roof is probably Rubber, (EPDM) or TPO) and will have a thin luan plywood underlayment that the rubber membrane is glued to. Sometimes part or all of that luan will have to be replaced. In this area, replacing the rubber membrane costs about $135 per linear foot of roof.

This shows the ultra construction but may not be accurate for your 1992.

hope this helps...

Take a look at my link to the RV re-roof that we did a few years ago. It should answer most of your questions.

Rubber roofing in glued to the substrate (usually luan plywood). When the membrane is pulled up it usually pulls the wood with it. That usually requires that the luan be replaced.

Re: roof material

Thanks guys for the info,
I did a little research and apparently Rhino Linings has a spray application that is now used on RV & trailer roofs. Im looking into it to see if it will cost less than the rubber roof. Maybe I can cut the costs down if I do the luan replacement myself, who knows. Will let you know after i talk to them.

You need to look into "Liquid Roof". It goes right over your old roof. You can do it or under $500. Also go to Utube for instruction of application. You won't be sorry.

Many installers do not want to take the time in removing the old roofing to do so without destroying the luan. they just rip it off.
The coach builder should be able to tell you the type of adhesive they used. If its neoprene all that is needed is a good sharp knife. If its latex a heat gun will soften the adhesive so it can be pealed off.
Its very time consumming, but it can be done.
