RV Mechanical repairs in Penn
We had an unfortunate breakdown in Penn that resulted in us being towed to a repair shop.
HORWITH TRUCKS NORTHAMPTON PA 24435658 is where we ended up as per the tow truck drivers suggestion.
I assumed quality or work and fairness of price compared to an actual RV Repair shop.... WRONG!!
Break down was due to valve adjustment screwup in cummins factory, 38,000 miles and both intake and exhaust rockers were far out of adjustment, enough on the exhaust that the push rod fell away from the rocker causing the valves to remain closed during the exhaust stroke.
Repair was replace one rocker arm and push rod, had an overhead done while we were in there. They had a rookie mechanic do the repair, I kept track of the time he put in and also had the opportunity to observe most of the work. Fiddle fart is an apt description of the speed of his work, I've had an overhead done on a cummins prior that took the fellow under an hour, this guy drug it out for 5 hours, understandable there is a Jake on this one which takes a bit longer.
When the bill was presented it was for 1300 US dollars, 150 in parts, 60 for diagnostic, remainder labor. Now, an overhead is typically 4-500 for an isl cummins and 95% of the labor involved in an overhead overlaps a rocker arm replacement, they attempted to charge for both repairs without the overlap, total hours he "worked" 9.5, total BS.
I did contest them and got back 400 but still paid a premium for slothlike work. I had to confront an pompous ass of a service manager, was insulted and was belittled by the jerk. Unknown to them, I am fairly well versed in mechanical repairs (just could not do the repair sitting on the shoulder of a major highway) so had a reasonable expectation for hours involved for those repairs/maintenance operations.
If you are ever stuck around NORTHAMPTON PA, stay away from Horwith unless you can watch and are savvy....
